Senior Community Organizer

BASIC JOB FUNCTION:
The main responsibilities of the Senior Community Organizer will be to help elevate IMAN’s work City and Statewide through relationship building, sustaining local campaigns, coordinate turnout/mobilization of leaders and volunteers. Maintain a local Englewood presence to help grow IMAN’s ongoing Organizing, campaigns and policy work. This position is also responsible for reviewing state/federal/local legislation and city ordinances that impact IMAN and the community, in order to assist in aligning them with the organization’s mission and goals. The ideal candidate is someone with years of experience in grassroots community organizing and is well-versed in the field.
Additionally, the Senior Community Organizer is responsible for supporting IMAN’s work around food and community health in Englewood and Chicago Lawn. They will build upon IMAN’s years of organizing that has led to the Corner Store Campaign, Go Green Community Fresh Market, and more.
The Senior Community Organizer will work with community residents, organizational partners, growers, distributors, and other stakeholders to strengthen and expand opportunities for access, education, and mobilization to support IMAN’s mission to foster community health. This position will report to the Director of Organizing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Implement an Organizing culture within the organization for learning and training staff, leaders and volunteers
● Provide leadership and guidance for Organizing staff in the department around campaign strategies, turnout and events.
● Grow IMAN’s Organizing presence in the Englewood community
● Develop a strong base of leaders and residents in Englewood and Chicago Lawn
● Co facilitate trainings and weekly meetings
● Represent IMAN at City-wide events, coalition tables, state/city-wide campaigns and dinners/ fundraisers.
● Support general IMAN organizing campaigns and efforts
● Maintaining a robust database of people engaged in IMAN’s campaigns
● Facilitation turnout for actions, events, and forums
FOOD ECOSYSTEMS AND COMMUNITY HEALTH:
- Work collaboratively as part of the organizing team with Go Green Community Fresh Market, Food and Wellness Center, and other departments to identify, meet the needs of, and mobilize community residents towards access to fresh food and community health resources
- Maintain engagement of local and regional growers, distributors, organizations, and other stakeholders and through producer to consumer supply chains that includes the Go Green Community Fresh Market, Corner Store Campaign, and food pantry
- Maintain IMAN community gardens and community kitchen as local spaces for leader and resident education and engagement
- Work in collaboration with IMAN Food Ecos team and Nutrition department to increase access to fresh and nutritious food and advocate for systemic change within food system with a focus on Chicago Lawn and Englewood through a Food as Medicine framework
- Develop and maintain a base of food ecosystems leaders who are committed to improving community health
- All other tasks as required.

● Strong interest and commitment to social, economic and racial justice. Well versed in community organizing principles as a means to achieve wins towards justice.
● Experience and interest in food, cooking, nutrition, and the local food movement including policy
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
● 5-7 years of experience working with similar social issues
● Minimum Bachelors degree
● Access to vehicle; Valid drivers license; Good driving record
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
● Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
● Ability to work for extended hours with a computer.
● Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $70,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
