Job description
Under general supervision, installs, inspects, measures, and repairs carpet and other floor coverings. Operates and maintains equipment. May train others on procedures and operating equipment.
Duties:
- Inspects the floor surface to determine the condition. Corrects any imperfections that may cause the flooring to wear unevenly. Removes damaged or defective materials using hand tools and replaces with flooring coverings.
- Takes measurements and studies sketches or diagrams to calculate the amount of material needed. Estimates costs of materials and labor, creates material list, requisitions supplies for each job and discusses with supervisor.
- Plans layout to include allowing for traffic patterns and placing seams for best appearance and longest wear. Prepares surfaces for installation of various types of carpeting. Rolls out, measures, cuts, and trims carpet to size. Installs carpet on floors using adhesives, staples, or tacks.
- Prepares surfaces for the installation of ceramic tile. Mixes and spreads plaster, concrete, mortar, cement, or other adhesives to the floor. Cuts, shapes, aligns and straightens tile using levels, squares, and straightedges.
- Cuts materials using hand tools to shape before adhering to the floor.
- Cleans up before and after installation, to include but not limited to, vacuuming, sweeping, and discarding remnant flooring.
- Records time spent on each job and records any material or supplies used on the job.
- Operates and maintains all shop equipment. Establishes standards and specifications for new equipment and materials and discusses with supervisor. Maintains a clean, neat, and safe work area.
- May clean ice and snow from sidewalks, streets, and parking areas using hand tools and heavy equipment.
- Continues to stay abreast of changing procedures and new products by reading trade journals and operating manuals
- Participates in training and educational activities. May train others on procedures and operating equipment.
- Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of any site support position to include assisting any skilled trade.

Required Education: High School diploma or GED or Trade School Certification, AND;
18 months experience installing flooring or closely related experience.
Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of materials, methods, and tools used to repair and install flooring
- Advanced knowledge of principles and theory in the safe operation of all equipment
- Ability to identify a problem with the flooring, choose the best solution, and correct the problem
- Ability to read and understand complex written procedures, specifications, blueprints, and diagrams
- Ability to estimate costs of material and resources needed to complete the job
- Ability to kneel, squat, pull, push, walk, and stand for extended periods of time
Certifications:
Valid Oklahoma Driver's License to drive University vehicles or ability to obtain within 30 days from hire date
Advertised Physical Requirements:
- Physical: Bend, kneel, crouch, reach, stoop, push, pull, and stand for prolonged periods. Use of tools used to install flooring. Communicate effectively. Use of calculator and computer. Carry up to 75 pounds up and down stairs.
- Environmental: Exposure to dangerous hand tools, dust, odors, and adhesives. May be designated as an essential position during emergency closures. May be required to remain on campus overnight during weather or other emergencies.
