Senior Software Engineering Manager

As a Senior Software Engineering Manager, you will play a key role in shaping and executing on an ambitious vision for the future of customer service and support. You will work with a hard-working group of product managers, architects, and engineers to deliver the best possible experience for agents and customers. You will provide technical leadership for a global, dynamic, and growing engineering organization with opportunities to still go deep as we build our next generation agent experiences atop the EG Travel Platform.

What you'll do:

  • You will be responsible for coaching and mentoring an incredible, hardworking team around their goals, delivery, and career development

  • You will foster a healthy and collaborative culture across teams

  • You will build a team of high performing software engineers utilizing your experience recruiting, screening, and interviewing

  • You will ensure your team delivers high-quality solutions on time, with technical integrity and stability, and continuously innovates to improve engineering efficiency

  • You will drive the evolution of design patterns with industry standards and new technologies, to improve productivity, quality, and system performance

  • You will participate in and lead design and architecture reviews, handle production incidents, and perform code reviews

  • You will work closely with teams from engineering, program management, operations, user experience, and product management, to build a roadmap and deliver

  • Anticipates and recognizes bottlenecks in work processes between teams and makes suggestions for ongoing improvement

  • Leads implementation teams and ensures the successful execution of new ideas or approaches

  • Coordinates with team to define the measures of success for process improvements

  • Develops product phase-out planning in line with the product roadmap

  • Determines different phase milestones and priorities in collaboration with product management peers

  • Extends outside of direct organization and collaborate with peers across a senior level organization

  • Partners with the business to have a clear understanding of how the technology stack is tied to business outcomes and our bottom line

  • Tests and maintains software applications and related programs and procedures by using a variety of software development tools following design requirements of customer

  • Acts as a spokesperson for software design best practices

  • Researches and recommends frameworks and architectural/code design patterns

  • Identifies areas of improvements within the code and suggests solutions

  • Advocates for operational excellence (such as unit testing, establishing SLAs, programming for resiliency and scalability)

  • Has broad knowledge of the entire product, and can help with any component, or type of issues

  • Is versed/has up-to-date knowledge in EG's languages, frameworks, cloud services, toolkits, methodologies

  • Gains insight into how customers utilize technology for their competitive advantage and applies this knowledge to suggest areas for improvement

  • Conveys the right information to the correct parties to ensure that proposals for improvements are given the proper consideration and technical issues are resolved in a timely manner

  • Contributes to product development by identifying industry change, listening to customer needs, capturing feedback and communicating that feedback to the business

  • Remains informed on industry trends. Examines inefficiencies in the existing stack operation and encourages engineers to improve them

  • Bridges the gap in discussions between technology and non-technology personnel. Reports on team status faithfully and listens for suggestions to improve lagging project work

  • Reviews the skill and expertise requirements to accomplish team goals and identifies staffing and talent resources to fill project roles

  • Develops action plans for optimal resource utilization and manages resource usage among team

  • Encourages others to assess the potential impact of resource decisions related to efficiency and cost reduction

  • Ensures optimal Full Time Employee to contingent worker ratios are maintained on team

  • Guides Individual Contributors and Managers in the development of team and individual goals, providing regular and specific feedback, and assessing individual and team performance

  • Encourages and supports education and professional development of Individual Contributors and Managers

  • Mentors Individual Contributors and Managers by providing advice and recommendations based on own experience

  • Shares domain and Industry knowledge between cross-functional teams

  • Evaluates the full complement of team talent, identifies gaps, and implements action plans to fill gaps and drive achievement of goals

Who you are:

  • Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in software engineering with global development teams; additional experience leading development teams preferred

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience

  • 8+ years for Bachelor's, 6+ years for Master's, 3+ years for People Management

  • Proven ability to grow, develop, mentor, and empower agile teams, while collaborating with partner and engineering teams

  • Experience delivering production-quality distributed applications in a professional software engineering role

  • Strong experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, React, NodeJS, Java, Kotlin, RESTful Micro Services, AWS technologies (including ECS, EKS, S3, Lambda), K8s

  • Experience with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence a plus

  • Ability to comfortably work in a fast-paced, multi-matrix environment, requiring strong oral and written communication skills across, up, and down a global organization

  • Excellent time management, resource management and planning skills, with a demonstrated ability to estimate, schedule, lead, and track multiple concurrent projects

  • Ability to actively identify upcoming risks, issues, and bottlenecks and resolve issues that sometimes cross departmental boundaries

  • Recruits at least 5 engineers to own team

  • Performance manages at least 3 individual contributors

  • Executes capacity planning/allocation of +10 team size

  • Manages individuals in different locations

  • Is strong in multiple technologies or languages

  • Justifies technology choices to technical and non technical observers

  • Responsible for multiple technical domains

  • Makes well defined technology choices

  • Mentors team members

  • Works with multiple teams

  • Rewards and recognizes multiple teams

  • Mentors individual contributors as well as managers on team

  • Defines teams goals and how they fit a business need across multiple teams working together

  • Delivers solutions to business problems spanning teams

  • Delivers and influences product roadmap, working in collaboration with product team

The total cash range for this position in Austin is $161,500 to $226,000. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $258,500 , which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.
