TheMedical Technologist III - Neurois a certified clinical laboratory technology practitioner pursuant to established and approved protocols of the NY Department of Health. Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologist. This role requires limited exercise of independent judgment and performs under the supervision of a laboratory supervisor, designated by the director of a clinical laboratory or under the supervision of the director of the clinical laboratory. Laboratory personnel will perform only those specialties or sub-specialties in which they are qualified by education, training and experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision and according to policies and procedures, performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of sections of human tissue for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s).
  • Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples.
  • Grossing of human tissue specimens.
  • Ensure proper tissue processing and cutting of frozen tissue sections using a Cryostat.
  • Operate laboratory equipment to properly fix, dehydrate, and embed tissue specimens in paraffin wax.
  • Perform tissue sectioning of paraffin embedded tissue using a microtome.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents for routine and special stain procedures.
  • Appropriately stain slides.
  • Perform special stains and immunohistochemistry procedures, under general supervision.
  • Perform cover slipping of stained slides either manually or automated.
  • Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
  • Perform filing of finished blocks and slides.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and troubleshooting minor equipment failures. Document remedial actions such as repairs and repeated tests.
  • Adhere to laboratory's safety, quality control and quality assurance policies ensuring standards are met and documented.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, federal, NY State, CLIA and CAP regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized work area. Complete thorough cleaning at the end of work period.

Requirements

  • Valid unrestricted/unlimited License by NY State Education Department (NYSED) Office of the Professions for Histology Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technologist; or Pathologists' Assistant; AND meet one of the following requirements:
    • Associate degree in laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution; or
    • Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that includes 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include in 6 hours chemistry, 6 hours biology AND 12 hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND at least 3 months documented laboratory training in tissue grossing.
    • Have previously qualified as a technologist on or before February 28, 1992; or
    • On or before April 24, 1995 be a high school graduate or equivalent and have either graduated from a medical laboratory or clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS; or successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician); or
    • Until September 1, 1997 be a high school graduate or equivalent and have documentation of training appropriate for the testing being performed.
    • Knowledge and documented experience in the following facets of histology: tissue grossing; cutting and processing frozen tissue sections; paraffin embedding and microtome sectioning of fixed tissue; routine, special stains, and immunohistochemistry.
    • Maintains educational credits and other requirements for licensure.
    • Ability to perform work in an organized fashion, with a focus on completing assigned tasks in an orderly fashion and in compliance with stated process and procedure.
    • Ability to work as part of a team to complete assigned tasks when necessary.
    • The ability to accept direction, work independently and complete work on time.
    • Ability to work under different levels of stress.
    • Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
    • Ability to tolerate extensive periods seated and/or standing.
    • Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
    • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
    • May have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab environment.
    • May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and general laboratory reagents; handle live human specimens, tissues, and bodily fluid.
