Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Special Collections Manager, the Education and Outreach Librarian leads department efforts to educate students and the public in using MVSC and Library resources through various outreach initiatives. This position also assists in providing reference service in the Missouri Valley Room and via email, contributes to the department’s digital history initiatives, and carries out special projects as assigned by the Manager.

Duties

  • In collaboration with the Special Collections Manager, develops and coordinates outreach initiatives and programs to promote the use of special collections and to further establish MVSC as a leading research center for local and regional history.
  • Provides instruction in accessing and using the library’s digital history sites and databases at schools, library branches, community centers, and other forums.
  • Collaborates with educators to develop programs, workshops, and resources to spark students’ interest in local history and in using special collections materials.
  • Creates online tutorials and walkthroughs for teachers, students, and the public in using MVSC/Library resources; develops lesson plans centered around special collections and the library’s digital history sites.
  • Works with Youth & Family Engagement and other departments to coordinate class research visits to the library and helps implement strategies for better service.
  • Provides reference, information, and referral services in Missouri Valley Room using an extensive collection of book, manuscript, archival and digital resources; recommends and retrieves materials in support of customer requests; communicates with other Library departments to provide comprehensive customer service.
  • Contributes content to KCHistory.org and the library’s social media accounts.
  • Prepares exhibits and other interpretive products featuring MVSC’s collections.
  • Leads tours and gives media interviews when requested.
  • Maintains effective, courteous working relationships with all library customers.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with staff and public.
  • Strong public service and history focus.
  • Understanding of the nature and value of primary materials for learning, teaching, research, and outreach and use of special collections materials to a variety of audiences.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of library and archives works.
  • Knowledge of materials and research techniques in the fields of local history and genealogy.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with database and web applications.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and off-site events.
  • Appreciation for a broad spectrum of library users’ needs and enthusiasm in promoting the mission of MVSC and the Library.
  • Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese.
  • Preferred qualifications include a strong public service, education, and history background, and a related advance degree in one or more of these fields (MLS, MEd, etc.). This qualification may also be satisfied by an equivalent combination of education, related work experience (such as work libraries, archives, or an education setting), and life experience.
