Appointment will be made on Specialist Medical Scientist salary scale (€61,130- €78,581) at a point in line with Government pay policy.

Hours of work:
35 hours per week

Responsibilities:
DUTIES
1 To perform his/her duties under the general direction of the Consultant Immunologists/Chief Medical Scientist.
2 To perform all aspects of technical work to the highest standard.
3 To supervise and provide guidance and support to senior medical scientists and medical scientists in the performance of their duties.
4 To organise the technical programme so that work patterns are efficiently maintained.
5 To carry out routine inspections of laboratory equipment in his/her charge and to ensure that the equipment is properly maintained and kept in serviceable condition.
6 To collaborate with the Chief Medical Scientist in the maintenance of efficiency and the introduction of new methods in the laboratory.
7 To assist in implementing measures for the safety, health and welfare of all the staff.
8 To assist in the training of student medical scientists, on call personnel, junior medical staff and visiting workers as required.
9 To assist in maintaining the accreditation status of the department through compliance with the requirements of ISO15189.
10 To assist in maintaining the accreditation status of the department through compliance with the requirements of the EFI standards
11 To represent the Consultant Immunologists/Chief Medical Scientist at meetings when required.
12 To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up to date knowledge.
13 To perform any other duties as may be appropriate to the grade.

Selection Criteria:
Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Qualifications:
Mandatory :

(a) Candidates for appointment must:
(i) Be registered on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical
Scientists Registration Board at CORU. See https://coru.ie/aboutus/registration-boards/medical-scientists-registration-board/apply-forregistration/
OR
(ii) Applicants who satisfy the conditions set out in Section 91 of the Health and Social
Care Professionals Act 2005, (see note 1 below*), must submit proof of
application for registration with the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.
The acceptable proof is correspondence from the Medical Scientists Registration
Board at CORU confirming their application for registration as a Section 91
applicant was received by the 30th March 2021.
AND
(iii) Possess one of the following NFQ Level 9 post graduate qualifications or
equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of
Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine;
MSc Clinical Laboratory Science, Dublin Institute of Technology
(DIT).
MSc Clinical Chemistry, University of Dublin, Trinity College
(TCD).
MSc Biomedical Science, University of Ulster (UU)
MSc Biomedical Science, Cork Institute of Technology/University
College Cork.
MSc Molecular Pathology, Dublin Institute of Technology
(DIT)/University of Dublin, Trinity College (TCD).
OR
(iv) An equivalent qualification at minimum Level 9 validated by the Academy of
Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).
OR
(v) Possess Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine
awarded before July 2018.
OR
(vi) Have attained the Fellowship examination of the Institute of Biomedical
Science (Awarded prior to 1999).
AND
(vii) Possess four years full time clinical experience (or an aggregate of four years’ full
time clinical experience) as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory
since qualifying as a medical scientist.
AND
(viii) Demonstrate knowledge and experience in the appropriate specialist area
AND
(ix) Demonstrate evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
AND
(b) Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high
standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the
duties of the office.
2. Annual registration
(i) On appointment, practitioners must maintain annual registration on Medical
Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at
CORU
And
(ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the
annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).
3. Health
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of
undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would
indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
4. Character
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.

Desirable:

Demonstrate the following Technical and Clinical Competencies
1. Clinical and scientific expertise in Transplant Immunology
2. Assisting in developing the service to address the aspirations of the transplant units and to meet the needs of the expanded transplant programme while maintaining excellent patient outcomes
3. Understanding the critical needs of the department and to show the skills to make changes with best practise to improve the service that NHISSOT provides nationally
4. Actively research in their area of expertise and provide advice on strategic plans
5. Developing pilot initiatives, evaluate outcomes, lead quality improvement change implementation and support other team members developing research skills.
6. Providing senior scientific interpretive on-call cover and participate in out of hours rosters.
7. Knowledge of best practice guidelines and protocols in laboratory medicine
8. Impart knowledge through meetings within the laboratory
9. Knowledge of the ISO5189 quality management system
10. Knowledge of the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) Standards for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Testing
And
Provide scientific leadership for the following programmes
1. Implementation of all processes to support transplantation & post transplant management of highly sensitised patients; including audit & quality improvement.
2. Supporting development of cardiothoracic transplantation, renal paediatric transplantation & post transplant management.
3. Development of a plan & implementation of policies, processes & procedures to support international organ exchange.
4. IT: Optimising and streamlining IT infrastructure for HLA typing, Antibody Screening and Deceased Donor programme
5. Expertise and/or develop expertise in advanced molecular techniques, antibody identification & crossmatch interpretation, management and IT.
6. In co-operation with the Chief Medical Scientist and department Consultants, to be responsible for managing technological development and innovation within assigned section of the department.
7. Perform routine, specialised and research /development work to the highest professional standards as determined by the Chief Medical Scientist.
8. Keep informed of trends and developments in the area of expertise and prepare the laboratory to respond in a timely and effective manner to meet service requirements.
9. The job Description will be updated at 3 and 6 month reviews in accordance with new service development.
