Job Summary and Qualifications

The Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for providing therapeutic intervention, education and recommendations to acute care and outpatients at Valley Regional Medical Center. The clinician will organize and implement speech therapy programs to restore function and prevent disability following disease, injury or surgery. This position requires proficiency in acute care, video-swallow studies, and outpatient services, to patients with ages ranging from infant to geriatric. Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional and ethical practice, while providing the highest quality healthcare that is patient oriented, advanced in technology, cost effective and with care and compassion. The hospital mission and vision will be insured by the integration of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and through the coordination of case management, social work and the ancillary departments in the hospital and community.

  • Must meet mutually agreed upon performance goals/objectives established annually as listed on the performance evaluation tool.
  • Demonstrates an understanding to appropriately protect sensitive and confidential information.
  • Adheres to company policies and procedures. •Dependable, takes initiative, manages time well, flexible with schedule, available for weekend shifts.

JOB SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE COMPETENCIES:

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs initial evaluations of patients and implements plan of care.
  • Performs Modified Barium Swallow studies effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Identifies and assesses the patient’s needs for special equipment.
  • Maintains up to date documentation in accordance with standards of practice.
  • Conducts tests and measurements of speech, language and swallowing ability.
  • Communicates effectively with patients in a caring and empathetic manner regarding their diagnosis, plan of care and goals of treatment.
  • Completes discharge planning by consulting with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care workers.
  • Attends departmental and hospital meetings, rounding’s (such as barrier rounding’s), consultations or conferences as required to contribute to patient care.
  • Assures continuation of therapeutic plan following discharge by designing home exercise programs; instructing patients, families, and caregivers in home exercise programs; recommending and/or providing assistive equipment; recommending inpatient, outpatient or home health follow-up programs.
  • Advises and trains staff members and caregivers on implementing a treatment program in therapy delivery.
  • Works within a team to improve the effectiveness of service delivery and positive outcome measures.
  • Maintains up to date documentation in accordance to standards of practice.
  • Punctual and complete attendance with hours of employment, work schedule, documentation, meetings, and conferences as it is an essential function of staff position.
  • Maintains and provides documentation to Valley Regional Medical Center of current professional licensure and CPR certification, and meets annual competency standards.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional associations.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Assists in development of clinical educational programs.
  • Develops and participates in departmental, hospital and community in-services.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. May be exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. May work with combative patients. May make home visits to evaluate home environment. Will be expected, as directed by supervisor, to provide services for any area in the hospital in which the employee demonstrates competency. Employee will wear radiation badge to monitor exposure to ensure safe levels of radiation exposure during video-swallow studies.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Texas license.
  • Master’s degree.
  • BCLS required.
