Sports & Recreation Coordinator
Salary: $15.00 an hour (Full-time/6 month position)

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Performs a variety of general administrative and technical duties as needed: to coordinate the day-to-day operation of one or more city recreation programs. This position takes is second in charge of the department when the Director is off.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Follows policies and procedures as set forth by the City of Belen;
- Performs a wide variety of recreational, clerical and maintenance duties to coordinate city recreational activities;
- Initiates and coordinates the daily follow-up and implementation activities as needed to assure timely delivery of scheduled events service projects, classes, league play and programs; supervises the cooperation and activities of such programs as basketball, baseball, tennis, racquetball, volleyball, softball, football, arts & crafts, gymnastics, aerobics, tours, etc.;
- Provides immediate supervision over recreation activities and seasonal, temporary or volunteer personnel; oversees coaches, activity specialist, site supervisors and officiators conducts training as needed;
- Maps out tournament activities for all sports throughout the year;
- May officiate or referee games or assist in coaching; maintains statistics for leagues and tournaments;
- Schedules sports leagues, programs and events; manages the annual and seasonal calendar to assure timeliness of program starting dates and conclusions; assures timely delivery of public notices and announcements as needed to afford target populations opportunity for participation;
- Assists in public relations by finding volunteer workers and presenting new programs to the general public; conducts registrations; completes post-program evaluations to ensure effectiveness;
- Carries out publicity programs; utilizes various forms of media, notices, publications, flyers and brochures to promote city-wide interest and use of recreation facilities and program participation;
- Works with local businesses to get sponsorships and donations;
- Coordinates Summer Recreation program (lead team meetings, supervises youth employees, makes monthly calendar, schedules field trips);
- Works on partnership with schools (buses, athletic fields, gymnasiums, swimming pool);
- Controls use of equipment and faculties by signing out equipment and by scheduling reservations for public faculties;
- Handles complaints from coaches, participants, organization, negotiation to achieve solutions, which better the recreation programs and services;
- Prepares cost and revenue projection for specific programs and events;
- Prepares ball diamonds, basketball courts, plus other sports areas and facilities function preparations, for activities and events planned;
- Works in close contact with the Park Maintenance Department on scheduling for outdoor sports;
- Originates, maintains, collects and appropriately files documents/information;
- Collects payments and keeps monetary records for the department;
- Coordinates and tracks facility reservations and collections;
- Accepts protocol, logs, and coordinates processes with supervisors;
- Assists with training, coordination and documentation for fellow employees;
- Monitors safety regulation adherence in the center, parks and at city events;
- Accepts and documents public complaints as well as provide quality customer service;
- Monitors and reports any illegal activity to the authorities;
- Monitors and collects timesheets and/or invoices for individuals needing to be paid on a timely basis;
- Scheduled for on call and off hours;
- Provides security services as needed for City functions;
- Responsible for opening and locking facilities;
- Acquires emergency medical attention to the public as needed;
- Availability necessary, flexible hours, days and holidays;
- Helps with the cleanliness and the upkeep of Community Center
- Perform other duties as necessary or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- (3) Three years of recreation program administration, physical education teaching, coaching, or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience or a combination thereof;
- Certification as a leisure professional is preferred (CLA). Must be willing to work towards acquiring certification;
- Must have excellent to superb people skills at all social levels;
- Working knowledge of the methods and techniques of developing and operating recreation programs; of the philosophy and objectives of community recreation programming; team sports management; community and public relations; rules and regulations of a variety of sports and comprehensive community recreation program;
- Working knowledge of the operation of personal computers and various software applications including spreadsheets, and social networking;
- Valid New Mexico’s driver’s license is required;
- Good oral and written communication skills;
- Able to work flexible hours, days and holidays;
- Organizational skills a must;
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and other City personnel and the public;
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule with minimal supervision;
- Prefer Spanish bi-lingual but not required;
- Able to pass drug and alcohol test.
EQUIPMENT USED
Knowledge to include use of common office equipment, such as: computer, calculator, copier, fax, postage machine, calculator, phone, or pager, two-way radio, exercise equipment, ladders, work tools (screwdriver, wrenches, pliers), recreational equipment and park maintenance equipment.

The employee is frequently required to use arms and hands to finger to handle, feel or operate office and work equipment and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to push, pull, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating, thinking and creative problem solving. Frequently local travel required in normal course of job performance.
The employee must occasionally lift up to 60 pounds and move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
