Overview:
Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Responsibilities:
The Communications Department tells the story of the NNSS to internal and external audiences, shaping our image and advancing our national security mission. Some of the most popular communications we produce, and post are messages, articles, photos and videos—internally and externally. This position is an integral member of the NNSS Communications Department team and will work with other team to meet the goals for the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, execute and evaluate communication plans to raise awareness of the people, programs and achievements at the NNSS internally and externally.
- Independently researches and develops timely story ideas, conducts interviews with subject matter experts, managers and others and coordinates necessary related photography and videography.
- Develop new ideas and angles of interest for communications projects.
- Edit copy for accuracy, grammar and style.
- Craft strategic messages for executive leadership as needed.
- Comply and evaluate monthly analytics reports and develops new courses of action to improve performance.
- Assist with management of intranet and NNSS.gov as needed.
- Assist with sensitive or complex requests for information.
- Participate in Emergency Public Information (EPI) program and as a member of the Joint Information Center.
- Assist with logistics and coordination of events and public and programmatic tours, VIP tours and visits, media tours and visits, official government representative visits, as needed.
- Write and distributes timely pitches, news releases and statements and follows up with reporters to coordinate media interviews and tours (when permissible).
- Write talking points and prepares subject matter experts and spokespeople for news media interviews.
- Write, edit and coordinate production of print materials such as fact sheets, brochures and posters in partnership with subject matter experts, internal customers and photo, video and graphic design.
- Take photos of projects, events, employees, etc. as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Management.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications or journalism or equivalent training and a minimum of 5 years of professional experience.
- Master’s degree in communications, journalism or related field preferred.
- Experience working as a professional journalist preferred.
- Experience delivering media training for spokespeople, including subject matter experts preferred.
- Working knowledge and understanding of NNSS programs, activities and organizations preferred.
- Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
- Experience with Content Management Systems such as SharePoint, WordPress, and social media platforms and tools preferred.
- Working knowledge of AP Style.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Build collaborative professional relationships with diverse individuals, including colleagues, customers, interns, news media, vendors, partners and the general public.

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
