Your Opportunity

This is an opportunity to join Stantec in one of our Minnesota Twin-Cities offices (Plymouth, Woodbury, or Minneapolis) as a Natural Resource Scientist where you will lead and direct teams performing wetland delineations, soil characterizations, habitat assessments, bird and wildlife studies, wetland mitigation and restoration plans, and natural resources inventories and will participate in this work as needed. Additional tasks include management of projects, report preparation, permit application preparation, regulatory consultation, permit compliance, wetland mitigation monitoring and reporting, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) support for Environmental Impact Statements/Environmental Assessments/Biological Assessments, and state Environmental Assessment Worksheets. Experience with renewable energy and electric transmission projects is highly preferred.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Task management and performance of field work related to wetland and other natural resource surveys, reports, restoration plans and permit applications
  • Project management of large, complex projects, particularly renewable energy projects
  • Team building and mentoring of junior staff to develop their skills in completing these types of surveys, reports and applications
  • Development of proposals, work plans, budgets and schedules for muti-disciplinary proposals
  • Providing presentations to internal and external clients
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Technical report writing including environmental review documents
  • Internal and external client correspondence
  • Occasional overnight travel
  • Organize and direct project teams for a wide variety of clients with environmental planning and compliance tasks
  • Provide quality assurance/quality control of project deliverables
  • Prepare USACE and state permit applications for Section 404 and state regulatory compliance including Pre-Construction Notifications, Jurisdictional Determinations, Individual Permits, Regional General permits, etc.
  • Perform/direct wetland mitigation monitoring field work and annual reports
  • Map and assess vegetation communities and habitat quality
  • Preparation of Critical Issues Analyses (CIA/Site Characterization Studies (SCS)) pursuant to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Wind Energy Guidelines (WEG).
  • Conduct or assist in rare species surveys and habitat assessments
  • Provide technical oversight and quality management of both field work and office deliverables
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary environmental planning and assessments for NEPA EIS/EA/BA documents
  • Perform environmental assessments, permitting, and compliance for a wide variety of projects and clients
  • Write technical reports
  • Manage medium to large sized projects and manage tasks on large interdisciplinary projects
  • Work in a variety of sectors including renewable energy, agriculture, wetland/habitat restoration, civil engineering, transportation, real estate development, city planning, and oil & gas
  • Work closely with a team of Project Managers, natural resource scientists, and wetland delineators

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Able to build strong relationships with key clients with respect to their technical area and the broader business objectives in their regions.
  • Must be comfortable with computers, technical report writing, and sub-meter GPS units and software (Trimble, Collector, Survey 123, WildNote, etc.).
  • Able to communicate effectively and function as part of team leadership.
  • An interest in ecosystems, natural resources, and the outdoors is essential.
  • The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and practical problem solving, complete field work with consideration to their own and the team's safety, and a good sense of direction is important. A sense of humor and positive attitude in all working conditions is key.
  • Proficient in policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training, leads by example, and applies these policies and procedures as appropriate to their work.
  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, ecology, wetland science, soil science, or related field with demonstrated experience with plant, soil, hydrology, and wetland identification and characterization in the region. Must have 10 years of experience related to above-described responsibilities.

Preferred qualifications for this position include a master’s degree in botany, dendrology, or soil science, Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification, Professional Soil Scientist (PSS), Minnesota Certified Wetland Delineator (CWD) certification (or in-training), or North Dakota Professional Soil Classifier (PSC). Preference for candidates with WEG CIA/SCS experience and USFWS Rusty Patched Bumble Bee certification will be given.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Some travel, including overnight travel, may be required for this position (up to 10%). Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
