Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE: The Sr. Health and Safety/Industrial Hygienist Representative provides Safety and Industrial Hygiene leadership to the Moab UMTRA Project. Identifies, interprets, and assists management in the implementation of safety and industrial hygiene requirements for all phases of work. Serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for IH hazards and controls.

Work location will be at the Moab UMTRA project sites located in Moab and Crescent Junction UT.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Help create and sustain a proactive Safety Culture and a strong Integrated Safety Management System;
  • Work with the Project Leadership Team to develop and implement sound safety practices;
  • Continuously evaluate the site for any hazards not previously identified or adequately controlled, initiate measures required to protect personnel, the public and the environment, and revise documents accordingly;
  • Monitor safety and health regulations and provides technical support to project personnel to ensure compliance with contractual, DOE and applicable federal safety and health regulations;
  • Investigate near misses, accidents/incidents, identify root causes, reports on the causes and solutions to ensure countermeasures are implemented in a timely manner;
  • Participate in initial task/activity/process design and development;
  • Perform walk-downs of tasks/jobsites/facilities;
  • Collection of exposure measurements using H&S or IH equipment and samplers;
  • Interpret results of exposure measurements and notify personnel of results;
  • Assist in development of programs, procedures and various work documents and permits;
  • Perform field oversight of work to ensure compliance with plans and procedures;
  • Perform inspections, assessments and audits of programs and ongoing work;
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of engineering, administrative and administrative controls for work activities; and
  • Perform other duties as appropriate and as assigned by project leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Current CSP and/or CIH Board certification highly desired, with CIH preferred.
  • B.S. degree in Industrial Safety or Industrial Hygiene plus at least 10 years of relevant work experience, with preference given to experience in the DOE complex.
  • Strong PC-based computing experience (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) essential.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours and days to meet project demands.
  • Strong technical writing skills which are customary to remediation projects, safety, industrial hygiene, incident/accident reporting, assessments, and position papers.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with severe abstract and concrete variables.
  • PC-based computing experience (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) essential.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Superior organizational skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, to maintain confidentiality, to meet deadlines, and to work in a team environment essential.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple detail-oriented tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED

  • Current 40 Hour HAZWOPER qualification.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate the ability to follow procedures, work packages, and/or protocols.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use different levels of PPE.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with field, project management, and client representatives.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must pass pre-employment background check.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, squat, climb and talk or hear. The employee is often required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

The work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to extreme outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is normally mild to moderate. The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, machinery, and vehicles. The employee will be expected to work weekdays, weekends, and evening hours for some tasks on a rotating basis.
