Description:
IBSS is seeking to fill a position to provide Software Engineer support to the National Weather Service (NWS) Office of Water Prediction. The candidate shall support the Atlas 15 program with the creation of precipitation extremes data taking into account a changing climate.
Key Responsibilities:
- In coordination with the team, develop and expand software used in the creation of a repository of observed historical precipitation gauge data, covering CONUS and OCONUS, that will be used to develop estimates for NOAA Atlas 15 Volume 1. The national precipitation repository shall contain both the full precipitation gauge time series and the derived extreme event time series. The repository shall be developed in line with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles to facilitate stewardship and future national updates.
- Implement automatic quality control practices, including machine learning evaluation techniques, based on best practices, and the extraction of the extreme time series data based on current Atlas 14 protocols
- Work with the Project Investigators (PIs) from NOAA and academia to validate and improved software developed for the Atlas 15 framework.
- Organize and maintain technical documents and data libraries utilizing electronic records management best practices.
- Assist scientists with the creation of deliverable and ad-hoc software
Required Skills /Education/ Certifications & Qualifications:
- Masters or Bachelors of Science degree in computer science, engineering, or IT related field.
- 8-10 years software engineering/development
- Knowledge of statistical analysis and computing, machine learning, processing large data sets, data visualization, and big data programming
Desired Skills:
- Experience with climate model and climate data would be a strong plus.
- Experience with Google suite products and tools.
