Description
To operate light to heavy construction and maintenance equipment in support of a variety of maintenance activities involving landscaping, street repair, and water and wastewater line maintenance; to perform loading, hauling, scraping, sweeping, mowing and related operations; and to perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks.

  • THIS POSITION IS ELIGIBLE FOR $500 PER MONTH SEASONAL (12/01/22-3/31/23) BONUS!
Essential Job Duties

The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.


  • Operate construction and maintenance equipment such as, dump trucks, boom trucks, skid loaders, bobcat attachments, front-end loaders, weed cutters, mowers and hedgers, cement mixers, forklifts, tank trucks, vactor trucks, patch trucks, fork lifts, street sweepers, ditch witches, snowplows and various other equipment for maintenance and constructions operation in the City.
  • Participate in preventive maintenance activities on heavy and light equipment as required.
  • Maintain production logs and records.
  • Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; pick-up and deliver equipment from construction sites.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites; and clean storm drains.
  • Remove ice and snow from roadways and parks as directed.
  • Construct forms, lay cement, and finish cement on curb, gutter, sidewalk, street, alley and other related areas; dig ditches; backfill trenches and holes; install storm drainpipes.
  • Break and repair concrete and asphalt surfaces; excavate and replace concrete and asphalt surfaces; perform hot patching and sealing of surfaces; shovel and rake asphalt.
  • Clean debris from ditches, culverts and creek beds; collect and haul trash, debris, dirt, sand and gravel.
  • Set up and take down traffic warning device and barricades for traffic control.
  • Install street signs; ensure compliance with regulations and ordinances.
  • Paint City streets, including cross walk lines, curbs, and traffic control symbols.
  • Operate a street sweeper; clean and maintain roadways; pick up litter; clean storm drains

Fiscal Responsibilities: Incumbent does not have budget or money handling responsibilities.

City Organization Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Represent the Department and City to other City staff and members of the public.
  • Provide quality customer service to individuals needing assistance.
Supervisory Relationships: Works under the leadership of the Sr. Streets Operator and under direct supervision of the Streets Supervisor. Incumbent does not supervise other employees.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • Basic practices, methods, and equipment used in grounds maintenance and general maintenance work.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Hazardous chemicals, herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Excellent public contact and customer service skills.
  • Operation and maintenance of all light and some heavy power-driven equipment.
  • Practices, methods, and materials used in grounds maintenance and general maintenance work.
  • Traffic laws and ordinances and rules involved in heavy equipment operations.
Skill in:
  • Operating and maintaining all assigned vehicles or equipment.
  • Performing a variety of semi-skilled maintenance tasks.
  • Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Reading and interpret policy and procedure manuals.
  • Communicating clearly and concisely primarily in verbal form.

Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
  • Work the allocated hours of the position.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
Work Environment: Work environment includes frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and outdoor weather conditions.

Physical and Mental Requirements/Activities:
  • This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of lifting/moving or force and occasional lift, move or drag 75 pounds or more while performing essential functions of the job.
  • Work regularly requires the ability to stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel crouch or crawl; and speak and hear.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Acceptable verbal and conversation skills to effectively communicate with others in English.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
  • Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and following directions.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education and Certification: Equivalent to completion of High School or GED.

Minimum Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing street maintenance work and operating light construction, agriculture, landscaping or maintenance equipment. Or, a combination of education training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the position duties and responsibilities.

Certifications Required: Must maintain a valid, CDL license during employment.
