Under the direction of Department Management, the Substance Use Disorder Counselor position is responsible for coordinating the substance use disorder services for AIAN clients. The Substance Use Disorder Counselor identifies the AIAN substance abuse counseling needs, develops recommendations, provides direct services, and coordinates to link clients with services and resources in the community. The Substance Use Disorder Counselor will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and represents the agency at community events, meetings, and during program reviews.

Duties

  • Conduct intake and screen for American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) eligibility.
  • Conduct an Addiction Severity Index assessment and identify an individual’s substance misuse needs.
  • Develop recommendations and case plan and provide resources, referral information and direct linkage to services for clients.
  • Coordinate with the Medical Department on all referrals.
  • Coordinate with service providers to develop, implement and monitor an individual case plan for each client.
  • Provide individual specialized substance abuse counseling.
  • Enter notes into Electronic Health Records (EHR) system as required.
  • Collaborate with other staff members in carrying out client treatment plans.
  • Attend required staff meetings and additional meetings as indicated by Management.
  • Maintain client charts in a responsible manner and meet all paperwork deadlines as required by funding and accrediting agencies and agency policy.
  • Adhere to agency policies and procedures and advance the goals of BAIHP in a manner that embodies the agency’s philosophy.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of client and personal information adhering to HIPAA, professional codes of conduct, State of CA regulations, and BAIHP policies and procedures.
  • Keep supervisor and CEO well-informed regarding activities, pending issues, and potential problems.
  • Arrange work schedule to benefit the BAIHP programs and clients with the approval of the Department Management.
  • Educate community members on topics of Suicide Prevention, Substance Use Disorder, Domestic Violence, and Precolonial traditions within the community’s context.
  • Mentor/train youth leaders to become cooperative change agents amongst their peers and within their local communities, including project-based leadership activities for campaign months.
  • Coordinate with Community Services team members for supportive services when disclosures of violence occur.
  • Represent BAIHP through network meetings, public forums, presentations, trainings, etc. as needed.
  • Participate in program and organizational development and fundraising and attend staff and team meetings.
  • Establish and host quarterly collaboration meetings with community partners.
  • Provides weekly Wellbriety support groups.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience with the AIAN Community including lived experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of culturally relevant AIAN customs and traditions preferred.
  • Experience in developing lesson plans, facilitating workshops conducting community outreaches, and planning/coordinating events strongly preferred
  • Experience working in the alcohol and drug addictions field preferred.
  • Case Management experience preferred.
  • 2 Years’ experience working as a Substance Use Disorder Counselor required.
  • Associate degree in health and certified in the substance use disorder field required.
  • Certified Substance Abuse Counselor through the State of California including CAADAC or CCAPP and/or another state accepted agency.
  • Valid California driver’s license and DMV report with fewer than two (2) infraction points within a 12-month period and automobile insurance.
  • Zero Major Moving Violations in the past four (4) years.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
