Substation: Equipment Operator/Laborer/Electrician
Job description
Duties listed are representative of the types of tasks and job functions performed by this position. This is a position, of a multi-step job progression approach, as it relates to field construction and installation of all substation apparatus.
Some problem-solving, analytical, troubleshooting and organizational skills are needed. In addition, time management skills are a requirement. The ability to follow Construction Standards, knowledge of electrical theory, interpretation of prints, manuals and wiring diagrams are helpful. In addition to these skills and abilities, the individual must exhibit the following core competences:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Gathering information
- Clean-up, put tools back, and keep job organized daily
- Identify objectives, actions and events
- Work alongside leadership to learn and grow
- Load and unload materials/equipment
- Communicate with supervisors, peers, and subordinates
- Build and maintain substations for high and low voltage
- Perform work in HV clearances on previously energized electrical equipment
- Work with concrete foundations, structural steel, ductbanks, buswork, conduit, power/control cables
- Assist the installation and/or removal of various substation apparatus
- Assist operating heavy equipment and/or helping other equipment operators
- Assist in the reassembly and testing equipment after repaired
- Multi-tasking
- Some knowledge of Electric/Gas Utility Services.
- Some knowledge of Construction Standards and SWP’s
- Some understanding of General Construction to include and not limited to, Surveying/Layout, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical
- Working in an Energized Substation in close proximity to Energized HV Equipment
- Required to perform all types of work in General Construction
- Learn to understand prints and drawings
· Learn installation standards and practices
· Splicing standards and practices
· Work to achieve the ability to understand schematics and technical manuals
· Assume responsibility for the proper operation and maintenance of all equipment, vehicles and tools assigned
- Learn Safe Work Practices and procedures, methods, tools and materials used in the electrical utility installation, maintenance and repair work.
- Mitigating risks, error prevention tools, job briefings and safety observations
- Principles of electrical theory related to electrical circuits and wiring systems.
- MADD
- LOTO (Lock-out Tag-out Procedures)
- Understand Zones of Protection
- Equipotential Hazards
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environment:
- Typically performed in the field, which requires travel daily from site to site and checking on construction.
- Position involves work outdoors on a year-round basis and is subject to extreme weather conditions.
- This position requires work in construction sites, which may be dirty and strewn with construction debris.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Exposed to moving mechanical parts, construction equipment, and vehicles within a construction site.
- Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies/procedures.
- Can be required to work extended hours and or scheduled off-days based on work conditions and needs
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to regularly and punctually attend work at assigned locations.
- Operate a motorized vehicle, which may include inclement weather conditions.
- Operate standard equipment for assigned tasks.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach with arms and hands, kneel and stretch, occasionally crawling in tight spaces, such as attics and crawl spaces as well as the ability to climb ladders and stairs, ride on platform hoists.
- Ability to lift, push, carry and pull materials and objects weighing up to 80 lbs. on occasion using proper lifting techniques.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to include grasping, and reaching.
- Good vision to read prints and computer screens.
- Ability to hear and speak to communicate in person and over the telephone.
- Must wear assigned FR clothing and all personal protective equipment (PPE)
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Must be able to pass all required training and access requirements
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- First Aid Card, CPR Certification
- OSHA 30 Training - Preferred
- CDL License - Preferred
