Position Summary:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Environmental Services is seeking a Supervisor to supervise, coordinate, inspect, and be responsible for the work activities of hospital custodians in order to provide a safe, clean and healthy environment for patients, guests, visitors and staff of UIHC. We currently have Supervisor openings on a mid-shift with rotating weekends (03:30P-12:00A with some flex). Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Take part in interviews and effectively recommend hiring decisions
  • Assist Coordinator in evaluating employee performance
  • Work with Coordinator/leadership/HR and effectively recommend disciplinary actions, promotions, merit increases, coaching opportunities, and terminations
  • Develop work schedules and direct the daily work routine of custodial Employees
  • Train and orient new employees
  • Develop and conduct formal training sessions to improve employee knowledge and skills
  • Inspect assigned areas and complete appropriate inspection reports
  • Coordinate and oversee hospital custodial functions that meet various specialized departmental needs using specialized knowledge of requirements for environmental conditions, linen requirements, medical records, proper decontamination procedures, etc.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

We as a department are responsible for the upkeep and cleaning of over 2.8 million square feet of the hospital. The department provides support through 24/7 operations.

Position Requirements:
  • Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
    • Two years of custodial experience or related building and facilities maintenance
    • Minimum 6 months of supervisory experience; supervision to include assigning daily work activities, inspecting and monitoring quality or work, and scheduling and coordinating work activities
  • Desirable Qualifications:
    • Ability to read, write, and follow directions
    • Basic to intermediate computer skills
    • Knowledge of hospital equipment and supplies
    • Knowledge of infection control protocols and isolation guidelines
    • Experience cleaning equipment
    • Experience in customer service and working with the public
    • Experience working in a healthcare setting
