Simplicitas is a small ethically based social enterpirse providing supported living services to people with complex health adn disability needs since 2007. Support workers receive extensive training to enable them to give a good quality of life to the people we support. The service is based on the beleif that everyone has the right to live a life which is as independent as it can be, whatever their needs or disability.

- Job Purpose: The Primary function of support staff is:
To provide care and support within the home at the hours prescribed and to work with the service user towards achieving the targets outlined in the care plan. Support staff will understand the primacy of the relationship between themselves and the service user as a powerful tool to influence behaviour and will at all times behave and interact with service users in a way which recognises, values and respects this power;
To enable service users with complex needs to live safely within their own homes and to support family members in creating and sustaining structures and programmes which enable the service user to continue to live in a family environment where appropriate;
To enable troubled service users to achieve positive progress which will maximise their chances of living independent and fulfilling adult lives;
To contribute to the provision of safe, caring and supportive environments in which service users are enabled both to address specific areas of difficulty in their lives and to enjoy as far as possible ‘normal’ age appropriate recreational and social activities;
To contribute to the overall effectiveness of the organisation and to strive towards excellence in care practice at all times through positive role modelling.
Person Specification:
Essential Desirable
1. A good standard of general education including A degree in Social Care or related area evidence of training undertaken in one or more of the following areas: residential care; therapeutic interventions; learning disability and/or autistic spectrum disorders; mental health; emotional and behavioural problems; challenging behaviour; attachment and child development theory; acquired brain injury; basic counselling
QQI Level 5 Qualification in Social Care
2. A minimum of two years recent experience of Experience bridging a range of settings or client residential or community based work with young groups people or adults with disabilities or complex needs
1. Understanding of relevant legislation
2. Knowledge of child development issues and the pathology of abuse and neglect
3. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
4. Willingness to engage alongside clients in a wide range of domestic, educational, vocational and social situations
5. A good working knowledge of the locality, the culture, the resources within the community where the client is established
7. Ability to create a nurturing environment and set boundaries to behaviour
8. Good communication skills and an ability to build networks and effective relationships with a wide range of people
9. Ability to control expenditure and a high standard of record keeping
10. An ability to demonstrate creative problem solving
11. Influencing skills
12. Willing to work unsocial hours, flexible, self motivated
13. Full driving licence
14. Good physical and mental health (The appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical report)
15. An understanding of oppression and ability to demonstrate and promote anti-discriminatory practice
Key Activities
.
- Provide appropriate levels of supervision as specified in the care management plan
.
- Encourage the client user in good standards of self care including health, hygiene, appearance and psychological health
.
- Promote independence by helping the client develop a range of life and social skills including budgeting, cooking, shopping, home-making and home maintenance, use of public services and leisure facilities
- Ensure that the client is assisted to maintain routines, including getting up in the mornings, attending appropriate appointments and participating in designated activities as appropriate
- Support the client in their education or work programme by taking an interest in their work, including home tuition or externally delivered courses, assisting with or encouraging homework, ensuring there are suitable learning resources available in the home, participating alongside the client in work experience programmes as may be required and undertaking suitable educational visits with the service user as may be directed according to the agreed programme
- Ensure the client is supported to participate in all therapy and health related appointments and to positively encourage their engagement in this process
- Engage the client in a variety of interesting and informative activities inside and outside the home
- Contain any expenditure within budgets set and keep any records of expenditure as may be required
- Maintain all written and electronic records and logs as required and ensure the security and accessibility of such records
- Contribute to the preparation of review reports and ensure that the client is encouraged to have their say both through the preparation of their own written contribution and through participation in the meeting itself
- Attend training as required and actively seek to develop and expand your own knowledge base in a variety of relevant areas
- Attend and contribute to statutory and internal meetings as required; to prepare and support clients for their involvement in such meetings.
Attend and contribute to regular supervision
- Advocate for the rights of the client and to ensure their views are represented in all matters which affect them
- Work reasonable rota’d hours as required by the organisation, to be prepared to cover for colleagues within reasonable demands in order to maintain stability and continuity for the service user
- Work solo and with others in the client ’s home/designated settings or community setting, having sole responsibility for the service user and the shift
- Respect the home and (where appropriate) family of the client and contribute to supporting the domestic character of the home, working with others in the support team and family/significant others to address any potential areas of conflict
Undertake longer continuous periods of work such as holidays, expeditions or specific training/development activities with the client, or periods of respite care for the family as required which may involve taking responsibility for the client away from home
- Ensure full preparation and support for any contacts with other family members as agreed in the support plan
- Be mindful of the strengths, needs and vulnerabilities of the clients for whom you have responsibility, and at all times and to behave in ways which are congruent with this.
- Assist the client in learning strategies to keep themselves safe and their behaviour within acceptable levels; when the client is temporarily out of control to keep them safe through a range of interventions, including approved physical restraint where necessary and appropriate

- To ensure that all duties are carried out within the framework of relevant legislation, regulations and policy guidance and at all times to abide by statutory and organisational health and safety regulation and policy

- Any other reasonable duties as may be required
