What You'll Do

As a Surface Scientist, the candidate will be responsible for conducting leading edge research and development activities with specific applications towards material compatibility, manufacturing, production, quality operations, or related national security applications. The candidate will conduct material science/surface science characterization and experiments in support of material aging and compatibility and manufacturing process research and development. In addition, the candidate will coordinate and prepare technical aspects of engineering projects from inception to completion, including project reviews, and give formal presentations to plant personnel and other interested parties. The candidate will participate in the development, research, and/or design of proposed improvements in production and the formulation of broad programs and mandatory requirements, acting as a leader, advisor, or consultant as required. The candidate will work with scientists, engineers, other technical staff, and representatives of design agencies, vendors, and contractors as required to ensure effective and necessary technical cooperation at all levels that results in the completion of assigned objectives.
The position performs difficult and complex technical project assignments requiring laboratory instrumentation work and, as needed, phenomenological and/or theoretical calculations. Education and background in subjects such as material science, chemistry, physics, solid state physics, and material science coursework is highly desired. Candidate must also work well in a production support environment where plant and production needs may necessitate accelerated project schedules. Minimum Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA and 2 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.25/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a PhD in engineering/physical science discipline with a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
  • There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Advanced degree in chemistry, physics, material science, or a related field
  • Technical knowledge and experience in solid state physics, thermodynamics, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and/or material science courses
  • Experience in Auger, XPS, FIB, SEM, EBSD, WDS, XRD, and/or related techniques.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate through oral and written word, troubleshoot analytical and/or mechanical instrumentation, and interpret data and draw conclusions to further research
  • Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment, and discretion under limited supervision; develop, manage, and report planned cost and scheduled work; and develop a plans in order to successfully achieve overall objectives
  • Experience with laboratory quality standards and/or software quality standards for analytical instrumentation

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
