In Sitka, we conduct a variety of wildlife day-tours on our custom-built expedition vessels including: The Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest, the Otters, Raptors, and Bears... Oh My, and the Wildlife Quest & Fin Island Lodge and Zodiac Adventure & Fin Island Lodge, both of which include an Alaskan-style feast at our new and exclusive Fin Island Lodge. Our tours are designed to explore, observe and share our local knowledge about the natural history and wildlife of coastal Southeast Alaska with our guests, and to provide insight into the Native history and cultures of the area.
We presently operate ten vessels, including a fleet of Zodiacs, based here in Sitka, Alaska. They are high-speed, waterjet-powered vessels (built in our own Sitka shipyard) that have been specially designed to enhance our guest's comfort and tour experience. Depending on size and passenger capacity, each vessel operates with a 2 to 5-person crew. Crew hired prior to the start of our regular season participate in our comprehensive, paid-training program. Many of our crew and support staff return to work with us season after season. Some work in similar "outdoor adventure" jobs, in other parts of the world, during the winter months.
For All Positions:
- Preference is given to applicants who are fully available to work from early May through late September.
- Must be drug-free. Allen Marine participates in a Coast Guard required pre-employment & random drug screening program for all employees.
- Must be at least 18 years old at date of hire, and able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work varied hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Due to the evolving workplace and governmental requirements for the Covid-19 pandemic, the duties and responsibilities of each position are subject to change.
- Vaccination for Covid 19 may be a requirement for some positions.
- All positions may be subject to Covid 19 testing, temperature checks, and other screening methods.
Sustainability Coordinator
The Sustainability Coordinator develops, proposes and implements policies across Allen Marine Tours, a day excursion division and Alaskan Dream Cruises, an overnight cruise division to promote the highest level of environmental responsibility. Individual will be responsible for securing Global Sustainable Tourism certification through Travelife organization; monitoring, maintaining and enhancing program to ensure company commitment to the pillars of Sustainability - protecting the environment, promoting local communities and supporting native culture. Individual will adhere to the core values as defined in our Mission Statement: Immerse each guest in personable and unsurpassed level of service we call True Alaskan Hospitality.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Create an official sustainability management plan for the company according to Travelife guidelines
- Designate a member of existing management team in each port as editors in the development of plan
- Regularly review & collect all performance data from team to produce annual report
- Assess best practices in all relevant company management sectors across all ports
- Codify existing sustainable practices referencing Safety Manual, Orientation & Training Manual and other internal documents to create sustainability policies
- Train & motivate vessel/shore crews to participate in new programs; design programs & handbooks to facilitate
- Design documents for onshore & onboard audits and to ensure compliance across divisions
- Evaluate all programs for improvement and positive impacts
- Demonstrate how policies and procedures benefit triple bottom line(people, planet, profit)
- Liaison with community organizations to promote company initiatives
- Develop annual stewardship projects for each division to encourage community support
- Work with Marketing department to conduct outreach about company sustainability program
- Create promotional & educational materials; write articles for publication about company activities & initiatives
- Perform as a role model for sustainable workplace practices in the travel and tour industry
- Conduct and attend relevant committee meetings
- Perform all other duties as assigned by Supervisor
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or equivalent experience in sustainability field
- Two years’ work experience in the Tourism Industry, preferably in Alaska
- Must pass a security background check and DOT drug test
- Must have a valid Driver’s license

Work Environment:
During the tour season, this is a fast-paced and dynamic work environment with a diverse workforce. On shore employee will experience usual office noise including telephones, computers, voices; on occasional tour or cruise will experience engine noise and encounter variety of sea conditions. Expect routine air travel between ports in Southeast Alaska.

Employee is regularly required to sit, talk or listen; specific vision abilities require close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Employee will need to embark and disembark company vessels which may include walking down ramps, across decks or docks. The employee must be able to occasionally lift and move up to 50 lbs. Employee expected to work minimal 40 hrs/wk including occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.
