Astoria School District No. 1C is seeking applicants for the following teaching position:
JOB TITLE: Teacher ELL/ELD - Astoria High School
REPORTS TO: Site Administrator/Instructional Support Director
EVALUATED BY: Site Administrator/Instructional Support Director
JOB SUMMARY:
The job of Teacher ELL/ELD was established for the purpose of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing English learner students’ English language proficiency and the ability to effectively perform course of study in the English language; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within the established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff and administrators in addressing instructional and classroom issues. Responding to a wide range of inquiries from students, parents and staff regarding the instructional program and student progress.
QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION:
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- Holds and maintains an appropriate license from the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission in the State of Oregon with an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) endorsement.
- Ability to pass a background check and criminal justice fingerprinting
- Effectively maintain and practice the state adopted Model Core Teaching Standards (OAR 581-022-1724)
- Demonstrates a very good command of the oral and written English language
- Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages related to the job
- Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district patrons
- Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings and events; gather collate and classify data, and use job-related equipment.
- Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using standardized methods.
- Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and groups; work with data of varied types and purposes; and utilize specific job-related equipment.
- Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines, and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Ability to work harmoniously and collaboratively with others
- Perform physical requirements which may include:
- Moderate degree of physical stamina
- Frequent standing, walking, bending and occasional lifting/pushing/pulling up to 40 lbs.
- Repetitive movement of reaching overhead, extending, fine motor movement of hands and wrist
- Ability to use telephone, computer, projector, and other office equipment
- Ability to make frequent trips to and from locations throughout the school building and grounds
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability needed for the position.
- Supports students in the development of their English language acquisition through direct instruction.
- Supports general education teachers in the adaption of core content work by providing guidance to develop and modify instructional materials, student language proficiency information, and lesson plan development to include support to build English language and content knowledge.
- Administer and evaluate language assessments for the purpose of student placement and individual program planning.
- Advises and informs parents and guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations, student achievement reporting, and developing methods to increase performance and reinforcing school/home relationships and communication.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, families, administration and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving student outcomes.
- Works with students to improve performance, problem solving skills, advocating for resources needed, and supporting the whole student.
- Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and subject specific assignments for the purpose of an effective program that addresses individual student needs.
- Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Models English communication for the purpose of developing student ability to communicate effectively in the English language.
- Monitors students in a variety of educational environments for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
- Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. ELD meetings with families, PLC, IEP, data team, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform functions of teaching and optimize student learning.
- Prepares and disseminates a variety of written materials and correspondence for the purpose of documenting student progress and compliance with district, state and federal program requirements.
- Reports incidence (fights, suspected abuse, harassment, and discrimination) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to the district, state, and federal policies and regulations.
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and directing appropriate personnel to issues of need.
- Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources such as parents, staff, and administration, for the purpose of improving outcomes for students, resolving issues and providing accurate progress information.
- Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages and ratios. Read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and facilitate discussion. In addition, analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations, and laws; age-appropriate activities; lesson planning; understanding of child development stages.
- Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision, using standardized practices and methods; directing other people within the work unit; tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform job functions. There is an opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.
- Directs volunteers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students.
- Performs other duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the school and educational program.
