GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this classification in the division of Enhanced 911 is to initiate a response to incoming calls for emergency and non-emergency assistance.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a call-taker or dispatcher
- Years of related education may substitute for years of related experience
- Partial years of credit may be granted for every 15 credit hours of education in an unrelated field
All applicants who are not currently certified as a Telecommunicator in Kentucky will be required to pass a public safety communications pre-employment test (CritiCall), which measures the applicant’s skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the Telecommunicator’s job. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Receives, interprets, classifies, prioritizes and responds to calls of a routine and emergency nature
- Enters, updates and retrieves relevant information using multiple computerized systems, including government databases and a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system
- Provides emergency medical and crisis intervention instructions to callers
- Maintains access to and security of highly sensitive materials
- Performs related work as assigned
SPECIAL LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
Those who are not already certified as a Telecommunicator in Kentucky will be required to attend the state of Kentucky’s Public Safety Dispatch Academy in Richmond, KY, obtain certification within the first six (6) months of employment, and maintain certification as a condition of continued employment. The four-week academy is a program of the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT). Attendees of the academy are required to live in the dorms at DOCJT for the duration of training.
Must obtain Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification within the first six (6) months of employment and maintain certification as a condition of continued employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- All positions require drug testing and background check before employment and may require a post-job offer physical.
- Responsible for meeting annual in-service training requirements necessary to maintain certification as a Public Safety Telecommunicator
- Must be able to work a varied schedule
In accordance with KRS 15.540:
- Must be a US citizen
- Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or other crimes involving moral turpitude
- Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check
- Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test
- Must submit to a pre-employment suitability test
EXAMINATION
Applicants who meet the minimum education and experience requirements will be invited to schedule their CritiCall Personnel Selection System test. The names of those who pass the CritiCall test will be sent to the hiring official. The hiring official may invite you to schedule an interview and if selected to continue in the process, you will complete the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council's (KLEC) Suitability Screening in Richmond, KY. Applicants will undergo further examinations to include a polygraph and extensive background check.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Telecommunicators hired between October 11, 2022 and June 30,2023 are eligible for a retention and recruitment incentive.
- Six (6) months from hire date, employees will receive a $900 payment.
- One (1) year from hire date, employees will receive a $2,100 payment.
