Job Summary

Function: Sign Maintenance
- Installs, repairs, and removes permanent signs and messages according to MUTCD and Traffic Engineer Manual and to ensure the safety of the motoring and pedestrian public.
- Installs emergency and temporary signing on detours, construction projects and other emergency projects so that the motoring public is guided safely through project areas on truck highways.
- Stakes sign locations and conducts Gopher One Call to ensure no utility lines are damaged during sign installation.
- Determines proper traffic control layout and performs traffic control in accordance with the Traffic Control Field Manual to ensure maximum safety of projects for employees and the traveling public.
- Partially fabricates standard signs such as speed limit numbers, mile markers, and Country Road signs so that the correct sign is placed according to sign specifications.
- Maintains a history of signs using a sign management system (TAMS) so that charge outs and other paperwork are kept accurate and potential tort claims are minimized.
- Tracks sign inventory so that signs are ordered and materials is on hand when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Function: Snow & Ice
- Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.
- Prepares and inspects winter equipment-maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and clean equipment post storm.
- Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps and roadways.
- Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.

Minimum Qualifications

The level of experience to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:
- One year of experience performing any of the following: sign installation and maintenance, roadway and roadside maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, operating heavy equipment, farm experience, snow plow operations, road construction, etc.;
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
- A Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction. Must obtain Class A within 6 months.
Transportation Associate Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess a Commercial Learner's Permit with no air brake restriction at the time of application. Tanker Endorsement must be obtained by hire date. You will be trained and must obtain a Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Veterans may be eligible for a waiver of CDL based on military experience. Please contact your County Veteran Service Officer ( http://www.minnesotaveteran.org/cvso/ ) to obtain a copy of your VMET DD2586.
A revoked, suspended or canceled Driver's License within the last five (5) years may disqualify a candidate or three (3) serious traffic violations during any 12 month period of time will disqualify a candidate.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically requires the ability to lift 100 pounds maximum with frequent moving and/or lifting or otherwise transfer of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or moving or standing or sitting to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous physical labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing.
Weather elements: May require frequent exposure to weather elements (cold and hot) on a daily basis.
Additional Requirements
Applicants are required to take a math and reading assessment. Applicants will be sent an email with details on how to schedule an assessment test as well as information regarding free practice tests. A passing score of level 3 or higher on the math portion of the computerized test and level 4 or higher on the computerized reading test. Passing scores are valid for five years. The job offer is contingent on passing a basic math and reading test.
NOTE: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).
The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
