Entry level work going through a training program in water treatment, or water pollution control facilities, leading to certification by the State of Florida as a Certified Water Treatment Plant Operator. Work is performed under close supervision.

Essential Job Duties


The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • This is a training position limited to a period of eighteen (18) months. Appointments beyond this time can only be made upon the recommendation of the immediate Supervisor and The Plant Manager for a period not exceeding six (6) months.
  • Assist plant operators in monitoring plant equipment through visual inspection for proper operating parameters and mechanical integrity; maintains a plant log detailing specific information.
  • Assists in the operation and monitoring of all plant processes including filters, softening clarifiers, thickeners, vacuum filters, nanofiltration systems, degassifiers, scrubbers, etc., and chemical delivery systems for chlorine, lime, polymer, phosphates, fluoride, ferric chloride, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and ammonia.
  • Obtains and records field and computer readings of flow, tank and silo levels. Ensures delivery of various chemicals to their appropriate tanks; monitors the transfer of chemicals; receives chemicals for laboratory analysis.
  • Collects samples and assist with all laboratory tests and or analysis including for chlorine, ammonia, pH, fluoride, conductivity, color, turbidity, alkalinity and hardness.
  • Operates and adjusts pumps, agitators, computers, valves, and other equipment to maintain the highest degree of treatment under supervision.
  • Complies with safety regulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Gains knowledge of and complies with all federal state and county regulations for safe drinking water.
  • Reads a variety of charts meters and SOP’s; maintains accurate log sheet.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep buildings, vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, painting of building surfaces, pipes and equipment, maintaining grounds including removing trash and emptying trash cans, replacing light bulbs, refilling paper supplies, reporting faulty equipment or problem situations.
  • Works around rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals.
  • Performs various skilled and manual tasks in support of plant operations, which may include cleaning tanks, inspecting/draining containment areas, hosing clear well decks, checking/cleaning service pump room, exercising/cleaning eyewash and showers, de-scaling treatment basins, wiping down equipment and control panels, loading/unloading materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, painting building, piping and/or equipment surfaces.
  • Utilizes a variety of mechanic tools which may include carpentry tools, shovel, pickaxe, testing materials, diagnostic tools and radio communications equipment.
  • Conducts periodic inventory counts of equipment, tools, chemicals, and supplies.
  • Follows safety procedures while performing job functions, especially with the handling of caustics and acids; utilizes safety equipment when/where required, monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Assists with maintaining and updating the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) logbook.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS
:

  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Must obtain water treatment plant operator class “C” license through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection within two consecutive testing cycles after eligibility (one year of plant experience).

Knowledge of and the ability to perform arithmetic computations involving whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Ability to appropriately apply basic chemistry, microbiology, mathematics and technology concepts as related to the process. Ability to properly maintain tools and equipment Demonstrate ability to read comprehend and correctly apply written instructions, operation and maintenance manuals, plans, and other job-related materials. Ability to work rotating shifts as required.

A comparable combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position, may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. ESSENTIAL
PHYSICAL SKILLS:
Ability to climb stairs in order to obtain samples, maintain work areas including lime machines and chemical feeders. Task require the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting carrying pushing and or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50 pounds) , the ability to work in dusty areas while maintaining / clean work areas especially at lime machines. The ability to bend and collect samples and physically shovel lime grit waste. The ability to stand for long periods of time to perform chemical analysis.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
:
Works inside and/or outside in various weather conditions with noise, chemicals, electrical energy or radiant energy, and odors. Works in confined spaces and slippery surfaces. Around electrically energized equipment and/or uneven surfaces and/or heights up to 60 feet

Essential Employees
May be required to work during declared emergencies. The employee’s Supervisor or Plant Manager will determine who will be required to work.
