Basic Function

The Unit Inspector utilizes inspection management systems, methodology, tools and programs to ensure ongoing reliability, cost effective maintenance, safe operations and continuous improvement in the stationary equipment. The Unit Inspector is responsible for the stationary equipment inspection program for their assigned unit or area. This role is responsible for executing reliability programs such as Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI), Above Ground Storage Tanks Inspections (AST), RBI, etc.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Prioritizes work with planning/maintenance to ensure continued reliable operation.
  • Develops Inspection Test Plans (ITP) and performs quality assurance (QA) surveillance on repair jobs and new fabrications.
  • Uses computer-based inspection management system tools (Meridium, SAP, Plant Manager)
  • Mechanical integrity lead for a maintenance turnaround.
  • Reviews welding procedures, procedure qualifications and welder qualifications for carbon steel and stainless-steel materials.
  • Ensures all fixed equipment mechanical integrity activities meet or exceed corporate, local and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs risk-based analysis (e.g. RBI, RAT, RVIFT), develops inspection plans, coordinates inspections, evaluates inspection results, develops run/repair/replace recommendations, tracks inspection findings/recommendations to closure and keeps RBI evergreen.
  • Continuously optimizes inspection plans to reduce inspection and maintenance cost. Assists other unit inspectors in optimizing their inspection plans and implementing best practices.
  • Develops and optimizes stationary equipment inspection and repair scope for the turnaround.
  • Plans NDE resources for the turnaround and leads the execution of inspection scope during the turnaround.
  • Supports or leads special reliability projects such as Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI), Above Ground Storage Tanks Inspections (AST).
  • Leads or supports incident investigations and Root Cause Failure Analyses.
  • Proactively participates in the development and testing of new tools and applications in the inspection area.
  • Proactively monitors technological developments in the NDE field and conducts tests to determine field of application.
  • Supports mentors and helps develop less experienced inspectors and engineers.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 10 years or more relevant inspection experience in the refining, petrochemical or chemical process industries
  • Holds two of the four certifications (API-510, API-570, API-653, AWS-CWI certifications).
  • Knowledgeable of inspection and repair requirements in API, ASME, NBIC and state/local regulations (such as boiler codes/laws).
  • Knowledgeable of inspection techniques, performing API/CWI inspections and evaluating inspection results per industry Codes and Standards.
  • Basic knowledge of damage mechanisms leading to equipment failure such as corrosion, erosion, chloride stress corrosion cracking, fretting, etc.
  • Ability to work across multi-disciplinary and diverse teams and interact appropriately with all levels of the organization.
  • Strong working computer skills in Meridium, Plant Manager, and SAP
  • Commitment to GoalZERO performance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an owner/operator unit inspector role
  • Specific knowledge in SynGas and/or Acetyls equipment and damage mechanisms
