Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, seeks a Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs. Reporting to a College President, a Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs serves as the college’s Chief Academic Officer, responsible for planning, developing, administering and providing management oversight of the college’s instructional programs (associate degree, skill/certificate, adult education, continuing education), the management and evaluation of instructional faculty, staff and administrators, and the evaluation of programs for compliance with academic and accreditation standards and practices.
As the Chief Academic Officer, the Vice President provides strategic leadership for a college’s instructional functions, working collaboratively with senior administrative staff to develop and implement innovative approaches to enhance academic excellence and provide students with innovative teaching methods, the latest in educational technology, and committed support services.
The Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs also leads and coordinates initiatives in working with senior administrators and external stakeholders to build partnerships, education/career goal pathways, and internship opportunities to enhance and support learning experiences. Performs related duties as required.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides overall strategic leadership for the college’s instructional functions with guidance from the President.
- Plans, administers, and evaluates instructional programs of the college. Directs curriculum review and development.
- Assists the President in planning, organizing, and directing the operations, staffing, and budgeting needs of the college
- Supports college plans to ensure continuous and measurable improvement in student life cycle benchmarks including enrollment, retention, persistence, completion and post completion success.
- Facilitates collaborative relationships between the district and college departments to develop a student-centered approach to enrollment and retention.
- Plans, establishes priorities, assigns work, monitors progress and evaluates results of all academic programs and student support services at the college.
- Supervises all aspect of the system of academic personnel administration at the college. Develops, coordinates and/or implements staff and faculty development programs.
- Provides advisory recommendations to the President on all academic faculty
- appointments including tenure, promotion and lane advancement, sabbatical, and all related matters to ensure that such processes comply with the terms of faculty and staff bargaining agreements and CCC’s policies and procedures.
- Conducts performance evaluations and establishes professional development programs and succession planning for employees for direct reports including college deans, program administrators and non-academic staff.
- Oversees efforts in identifying and implementing creative recruitment and marketing strategies designed to meet student enrollment goals.
- Works with faculty and deans to develop, evaluate and modify curricula and programs. Leads the Illinois Community College Program Review. Creates and maintains articulation agreements.
- Manages grant processes inclusive of research and review of grant opportunities, completion of new grant applications, grant implementation, and maintenance grants’ audit and compliance review requirements.
- Proactively researches and integrates national best practices for community college and higher education to ensure continuous improvement.
- Collaborates with Institutional Effectiveness to establish and implement a culture in which continuous quality improvement and planning activities are integrated, understood, and practiced in a manner consistent with the college’s mission, values and vision.
- Cultivates an organizational culture of ethical behavior, positivity, professionalism, employee empowerment, satisfaction, and productivity.
- Participates in college and district governance and strategic planning.
- May serves as chief administrator of the college in the absence of the President.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university. An earned Doctorate degree from an accredited institution is preferred;
- 5 years of successful academic administrative leadership experience at the chair (or equivalent) level or higher, preferably in a community college setting;
- Five years of full-time teaching experience in higher education. Evidence of achievement in teaching, service, and scholarship commensurate with a tenure appointment at the college is preferred;
- Demonstrated experience facilitating strategic planning, academic planning (including academic support areas), and curriculum development; assessing institutional effectiveness and evaluating programs; overseeing enrollment management; and developing and executing data-informed policy and decision-making;
- Demonstrated experience managing a budget and allocating resources, developing resources, procuring grant funding, and building external partnerships;
- Experience working in a collective bargaining environment is preferred;
- Experience working in and creating environments supportive of equity, diversity, and inclusivity;
- Knowledge of higher education accreditation procedures and articulation processes. Experience leading the ongoing efforts of a college to meet and maintain accreditation standards and establishing articulation agreements is preferred;
- An understanding of, respect for, and commitment to shared governance.
