At ENGIE, we are developing and building today the low carbon energy systems of tomorrow. Our 2030 goals include building an additional 40 GW of renewables, 10 GW of battery storage and 4 GW of clean hydrogen capacity. North America has been identified as a key area for ENGIE to realize a substantial part of this ambition. The Energy Storage team is part of the Flexible Generation business unit, which develops, builds, and operates the dispatchable generation assets that enable the continued build-out of intermittent renewables.


The Hydrogen activity sits within the Flexible Generation & Retail business unit. This entity is responsible for developing, building, and operating our Flexible Generation fleet, which consist of Energy Storage, Green Hydrogen, and Thermal Generation assets.


The Vice President, Development will report to the Managing Director in charge of North America, serve as a key member of the executive leadership team and be responsible for the development of our Green Hydrogen and E-Fuel projects.


What you’ll do:

  • Responsible for progressing ENGIE North America’s Green Hydrogen and E-Fuels projects from the origination to ready-to-build stage
  • Build a high performing Project Development organization, attracting external talent, building the team, implementing process and workflow standards, and fostering close collaboration with ENGIE support functions and competence centers
  • Actively engage as a member of the Flexible Generation & Retail executive leadership team, to align objectives, priorities, resources, and communication across the commercial, development, construction, and technical teams
  • Identify and drive key techno-economic project trade-offs (examples: shorter pipelines vs. lower power price, sizing H2 vs. electricity storage, designing for future scalability vs. lower immediate cost)
  • Continuously steer the projects towards an optimal contractual and technical configuration, including choice of technology, contract price levels, energy supply structures, performance commitments, siting decisions, ownership structures, financing structures
  • This involves co-creation with partners and clients
  • Iterate with the commercial/origination team to guide them on project viability and high-level economics
  • Determine the commercial & operating requirements for technical workstreams. Iterate and adjust based on feedback from technical teams
  • Oversee the negotiation of all key project agreements, coordinating with H2 Origination (offtake commercial lead) and Project Delivery (EPC technical lead)
  • Manage all site-specific development activities: land acquisitions, environmental site assessments, interconnections, permit applications, public hearings, interactions with authorities at local, regional, and federal level, tax abatements
  • Closely monitor the relevant legislation as well as any relevant subsidies
  • Take full budget and planning responsibility for the projects up to handover to Project Delivery (start of construction)
  • Elaborate a detailed development planning and budget, manage development spend, track project progress and risks, manage the external consultants supporting the project development
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of project model underwriting assumptions in alignment with group guidance and investment criteria
  • Ensure appropriate SME sign-off on all key assumptions
  • Review project pro forma financial models to ensure understanding of value drivers
  • Identify and track project risks & opportunities and drive the risk allocation between projects stakeholders (OEMs, EPC, H2 offtakers, Renewables, GEMS, etc.)
  • Present updates and requests to ENGIE Top Management, including capital requests for project development and final investment approvals
  • Organize and support the due diligence for (Tax) Equity & Project Financing
  • Ensure coordination with internal stakeholders: other ENGIE Business Units, Global Energy Management, Legal, Finance, Engineering, Procurement, Regulatory Affairs, Operations
  • Remain abreast of Hydrogen and E-Fuels industry trends and regulatory changes in the US and the EU (driving the offtake) impacting our projects

What you bring:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Business Administration, preferred
  • A minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant experience, of which at least ten (10) years developing energy infrastructure (power generation, transmission, energy storage, pipeline, industrial gas, petrochemical)
  • Experience in construction and operations is a plus
  • Proven track record developing industrial projects that are sizable (20+ project FTE), multi-disciplinary (BD, commercial, engineering, land, regulatory, finance), and multi-stakeholder (co-developers, equity investors, lenders, contractors, equipment suppliers, offtakers, landowners, local authorities)
  • Knowledge of power markets, electric grid, renewable energy, and energy storage
  • Understanding of the Hydrogen value chain, including midstream transport and gas management
  • Knowledge of the markets, incentives, and policies in the US
  • Experience with industrial gas plants, chemical processes, refining markets, Ammonia, Methanol, or SAF industries are considered a plus
  • Demonstrated experience with project structuring, techno-economic analysis, permitting, stakeholder management, and project finance
  • Strong analytic skills with ability to rapidly grasp and quantify key project value drivers and risks
  • Hands-on and result-oriented leader, able to work effectively at both strategic and tactical level.
  • Strong team player, highly capable of working constructively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Proven people manager, capable to organize work and foster high performance. Ability to attract and retain talent.
  • High level of organizational intelligence
  • Ability to navigate a matrixed organization and build consensus across multiple organizational level
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate with variety of technical and non-technical individuals at all levels of the organization

  • Salary Range: $151,980-$371,800 USD, annually
  • Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors
  • In addition to salary, this position is eligible for a competitive bonus / incentive plan
