Position Title: Visiting Faculty – Health and Physical Education Teacher Education

Summary:

The Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Health and Physical Education (HPE) program is searching to hire a Visiting Faculty to begin August 2023 and continue through April 2024. This position is potentially renewable, depending on available funding, for up to three total years. As a candidate for this position, you must have a master’s degree in physical education, health education, or a related field. Experience teaching in a PK-12 setting is preferred. Candidates must be enthusiastically committed to teaching to a diverse population of students; possess strong communication and interpersonal skills; and preferably have experience teaching undergraduate pre-service teachers. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates from underrepresented groups, and from candidates who have interest and/or experience in working with diverse student and community populations. If hired, you will be the instructor of record for 12 contact hours per week of introductory HPE courses (Personal Health and Wellness, Movement and Health Education for Classroom Teachers, Methods of Teaching Health-Related Fitness PK-12) consisting of lectures, demonstrations, and labs both in both online and face-to-face formats. All face-to-face courses are located on the Allendale campus.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Master’s degree in Physical Education and/or Health Education
  • Knowledge of national health and physical education standards.
  • Experience in, demonstrated understanding of, or interest in social justice education and/or initiatives, and/or inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.
  • Flexibility in teaching both online and face-to-face courses
  • Training to teach online will be provided by GVSU, and is required if accepting this position.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Physical Education and/or Health teaching endorsement certificate or license
  • Experience teaching in a PK-12 setting
  • A track record of teaching health and physical education to undergraduate students and/or preservice teachers.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching 24 contact hours of introductory lecture courses per academic year. Primary responsibility will be to teach courses in the area of Health and Physical Education to general student populations, elementary classroom teachers, and pre-service health and physical education teaching majors. These responsibilities may include teaching pedagogy courses in personal health and wellness; health and movement for classroom teachers; PK-12 health-related fitness; and other courses based on candidate’s expertise.
