The primary goal of the Controller is to oversee financial reporting, accounting, monthly/quarterly/annual financial results. The individual is responsible for ensuring accurate financial results, coordinating the budget process, preparing for annual independent audits, and supervising the Accounting Manager. This position will involve the ability to effectively coordinate with Executive Management, regulatory agencies, and program senior management on a regular basis. The Controller, in conjunction with the Accounting Manager, maintains the integrity of the financial accounting system. Assists the Chief Financial officer with new initiatives. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Directs all aspects of accounting operations, overseeing all transactions related to general ledger, receivables, payables, payroll and financial reporting.

2. Monitors financial performance by measuring and analyzing results; initiating corrective actions; and minimizing the impact of variances.

3. Develops and maintains all necessary accounting policies and systems, including general ledger and financial reporting. Ensuring that records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

4. Analyzes intercompany transactions and ensures that the property corporations’ remit to Volunteers of America Northern New England, Inc.

5. Works closely with insurance providers and ensures compliance. Works closely with the Chief Financial Officer to manage risk for the agency.

6. Assists senior management in financial planning and results management. Oversees monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.

7. Oversees cash flow management and forecasting in conjunction with the CFO

8. Oversees preparation of financial statements and financial data requested by funding agencies within funding agencies time constraints.

9. Prepare, review, and complete financial schedules for the annual independent audit in conjunction with the Accounting Manager.

10. Coordinates and oversees the annual budget process in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer.

12. Works closely with external auditors and investigates their findings and recommendations.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

This position requires initiative, flexibility, simultaneously meeting multiple demands, and the proven ability to work with minimum supervision.

1) Bachelor’s degree in Accounting / Financial Management;

2) a minimum of 5 years in a progressively responsible accounting role and supervisory experience;

3) Strong analytical, research and problem solving skills;

4) Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

5) Expert PC skill proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel;

6) Experience working with accounting software;

7) Ability to interact well with all levels of staff and funding sources;

8) Ability to work in a team environment and provide direction, guidance, and leadership to the accounting department

9) Knowledge of nonprofit organizations; knowledge of Medicaid, HUD, local, State and federal government funding desirable.
