Department Summary
The Institute for Translational Research is devoted to bringing novel diagnostics and interventions to patients and families suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, fostering translational research in neurodegenerative diseases at UNTHSC, and Create solutions for a healthier community. Our team spans basic “bench-top” science, clinical research, community-based research and clinical trials. Our translational approach is intended to foster discovery and expedite those discoveries toward the benefit of those suffering from brain disease. A particular emphasis of ITR is the development of personalized (or person-focused) medicine for Alzheimer’s disease.

Position Overview
This job operates in fast-paced professional laboratory testing environment. The role requires use of automated laboratory equipment and specialized software for daily routines and specific projects.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge and skills in using a range of software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), SPSS, STATA.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively; perform other administrative/clerical tasks.
  • Aptitude in general laboratory procedures, techniques, and documentation.
  • Willingness to acquire competence in new techniques.

Job Duties

o
Follow all safety regulations concerning the handling of biohazard materials to include cleaning work area, centrifuges, clinical trials and shipping.

o
Process sample tubes by centrifuging and placing in master racks in correct order and enter tubes into clinical forms and in the LIMS software.

o
Process outside testing samples by recording (on outside testing sheet) applying bar codes and enter into clinical form with correct information

o
Perform matching and verifications of tubes and printouts as assigned and identifies possible tube errors as part the processing protocol

o
Initiate troubleshooting of equipment and resolution of problems and reports outcome to Supervisor.

o
Record refrigerator/freezer temperatures and processing times. Discard old samples and store tubes in the refrigerator/freezer.

o
Receive samples from clinic and respond to any concerns in a timely and courteous manner.

o
Assist with weekly, monthly and quarterly quality control of maintenance of equipment, maintain inventory and make blood collection kits.
