Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Work Assistant (Youth Program) for Education and Training within Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
The Rutgers Youth Enjoy Science (RUYES) program seeks to encourage youth from groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences to pursue cancer research and healthcare careers.
The specific aims of the program are to:
1) Inspire, motivate and educate high school and undergraduate students through mentored cancer research training, cocurricular support and professional development activities.
2) Connect with middle school students and their families through innovative community outreach activities to enhance awareness and appreciation of science education and research careers.
The Work Assistant YP participants will engage in research and program related activities focusing on cancer under the supervision of the Program Director/Research Mentors. They will learn valuable research skills (experimental, and laboratory techniques) as well as professional career development skills under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator/Research Mentor.

- Receive hands-on training in cutting-edge cancer research.
- Conduct research in mentor-supervised laboratories for 10 weeks per summer for two consecutive years and engage in post-research program related activities for 2 weeks each year (total commitment of 3 months per year for two consecutive years).
- Prepare a poster and a 10-minute talk based on their research experience for presentation at the Annual Research Day.
- Participate in educational seminars addressing key concepts in cancer and exploring the research literature.
- Receive compensation for their time and other possible expenses.
- Attend workshops, seminars, lectures and career development activities associated with the Rutgers Youth Enjoy Science program.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- A rising high school junior/senior or rising freshman/sophomore undergraduate.
- High School or Undergraduate students who wish to prepare for a STEM career, preferably in biomedical cancer research, should apply for the position.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- From an underrepresented background in accordance with program guidelines.
- A citizen or permanent resident (green-card holder) of the United States.
- Willing to commit to two full years of participation in the program.
- Highly motivated and academically able to pursue a career in biomedical/cancer science.
- Must attend a school or university in New Jersey.
- Requires the performance of laboratory research.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
- For undergraduate students, enrollment as an undergraduate major in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with coursework in biology, genetics, biochemistry/molecular biology.
