Position Description & Details:
The Academic Advisor position provides academic advising for all pre-nursing and undeclared students, assists with New Student Registration duties, and supports academic advising initiatives across the campus. This position will assist students with understanding academic curriculum, course selection, university policies and procedures, and campus resources and referrals. This position reports to the Director of the Academic Support Center. Responsibilities include:
- Provide academic advising services based on the NACADA Core Competencies Model.
- Serve as an academic advisor for all pre-nursing and undeclared students.
- Assist students in academic planning and course registration beginning with New Student Registration and throughout their time at the university, until students transition to a faculty advisor upon acceptance to the nursing program or when a major has been declared.
- Assist students via scheduled appointments, weekly walk-in hours, email and phone call inquiries, in a timely manner.
- Provide additional support and guidance for students admitted on provision and students placed on academic warning/probation through positive outreach and other strategies to improve academic performance.
- Monitor early alert notifications and communicate with advisees in need of assistance.
- Utilize Starfish, Campus Connection, and Outlook to record student appointments, maintain accurate and detailed advisor notes, and communicate with advisees.
- Maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records, following Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations.
- Refer students, as needed, to campus and community resources.
- Understand and communicate university policies and procedures to students.
- Assist undeclared students in exploring, identifying, and declaring a major, in collaboration with Career Services.
- Refer nursing students to faculty advisor for assistance with internships or other career related questions.
- Assist in creating and maintaining campus wide advisor resource materials and advising website content.
- Assist with New Student Registration duties such as, assigning advisors, updating majors, maintaining participant lists, and updating advisor resources.
- Collaborate with nursing department faculty and attend department meetings, when appropriate.
- Maintain and build relationships with academic units and student services to remain current on important academic curriculum updates, changes in university policies and procedures, and other relevant information.
- Attend professional development opportunities, such as conferences and webinars, to enhance job performance.
- Assist the Academic Support Center in providing student programs and workshops, in addition to proctoring assistance, when needed.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; 2+ years of relevant experience; excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; attentiveness to detail; ability to work independently and as part of a team; strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner; ability to work with and present to diverse groups of individuals; strong customer relation skills; proficient use of computers and knowledge of various software programs, such as Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree; work background in higher education, working with students by providing advising services and/or coordinating support services; experience with Campus Connection, Starfish and/or other student success platform.
