Agricultural Research Technician

Amalgamated Sugar Company – Burley, ID

Amalgamated Sugar Company is seeking an Agricultural Research Technician. Working under the direction of the Senior Research Agronomist who oversees the official variety trials (OVTs) (50% time) and the Soil Scientist (50% time), this role is focused on establishing and managing scientifically rigorous research trials in the field and in a glasshouse. You will be a part of a team dedicated to contributing new knowledge to sugarbeet growers in Southern Idaho to enable them to improve their sugarbeet productivity, profitability, and sustainability. The role is ideally suited to someone who has an eye for detail, enjoys outdoor work, and has an inquisitive mind. Research conducted includes the evaluation of new sugarbeet varieties in the OVTs as well as a range of soil, fertility, agronomy, and farming system research trials. Based in Burley, this position is with Amalgamated Sugar’s Sugarbeet Quality Improvement (SBQI) Team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Field and Technical Support

· Organize and execute all OVT and agronomy-related trials and research projects.

· Perform and oversee design, plot layout, planting, and all cultural practices.

· Assist with the establishment of field trials and glasshouse experiments; including trial design, field layout, planting, and applying experimental treatments

· Day-to-day management of field trials and experiments including; weed spraying, insect and disease spraying, irrigation, and crop scouting

· Collecting research trial data

· Assist with crop harvesting and data collection at harvest

· Data entry, organizing, and formatting using Microsoft Excel

· Conducting soil sampling

· Ensure that fieldwork is progressing as planned and that relevant work objectives and deadlines are met

· Maintain accurate records of all trial activities

· Interact with individual site managers, align needs, and provide help if needed

· Road transport of research and farm equipment (loading, hauling, and unloading)

· Ensure fieldwork is being conducted safely and contribute to improvements in safe work practices

· Supervision of seasonal field staff as required

· Simple maintenance and repair of research and farm equipment

· Other responsibilities as assigned by the immediate supervisor or manager of SBQI

Secondary RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative Support

· Assist with the preparation of reports/information for publication and/or presentation to industry.

· Assist with the design and development of innovative soil and agronomy extension materials

· Assist with scientific literature review

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

· Skill in the use of farm tractors, trailers, spray equipment, and basic farming implements

· Idaho State driver’s license

· A current Idaho State Pesticide Applicators license – or willingness to obtain one within 6 months of employment

· An Idaho State Commercial Class A driver’s license (CDL) – or willingness to obtain one within 6 months of employment

· An eye for detail and the ability to strictly adhere to research protocols and methodologies

· Expertise with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint software applications

· Well-organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks/projects effectively

· A commitment to workplace safety including a proactive approach to safe work practices and hazard reporting

· Not afraid of manual labor or of working outside in very hot or cold conditions

· Able to travel out of town for work, including occasional overnight stays

· The ability to work under pressure at times while maintaining an even temperament

· Personal integrity and a desire to produce high-quality work

· Foster an environment that encourages teamwork and collaboration, both internally and externally

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

· A bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in agronomy, soil, or plant science is required;

· Knowledge of trial management or replicated small plot research is desirable

· Preferred 2-4 years of work-related experience in the field;

· OR any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
