UW Medical Center - Northwest is hiring an Assistant Administrator for Patient Care Services. The Assistant Administrator is a member of our senior nursing leadership team and will play a key role providing administrative leadership and operational guidance to our medical center.

Position Overview:
The Assistant Administrator for Patient Care Services will be responsible for leadership of the Acute Care clinical programs and professional nursing practice at UW Medical Center - Northwest. The Assistant Administrator will directly oversee 6 Nurse Managers and will indirectly oversee approximately 500 FTEs, with matrixed supervision of department-specific clinical nurse specialists and educators. The Assistant Administrator will oversee the complex and integral operations of our hospital’s acute care inpatient services, including our Medical-Telemetry Unit, our Orthopedic-Neurosurgery Unit, our Progressive Care Unit, our Intensive Care Unit, our Medical-Surgical Extend Unit, our Surgical Services Unit, our Nursing Float Pools, our Patient Throughput teams, and our Outpatient Infusion Floor. This position will collaborate with a broad number of departments and leaders across UW Medicine and will represent our medical center in local, statewide, and national committees.

    Position Responsibilities:
  • Serves as the Patient Care Services leader, working collaboratively with the Associate Chief Nursing Officer in all aspects of leadership
  • Chairs numerous committees and task forces
  • Serves as a role model for managers, faculty, and staff in demonstrating UWMC values and Service Culture Guidelines
  • Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational goals and objectives
  • Works with interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care operations and care delivery
  • Ensures best practice for nursing sensitive quality indicators such as falls, central line infections, pressure injuries and catheter associated urinary tract infections
  • Works with teams to ensure that evidence-based practice is utilized in all care settings
  • Supports nursing research and shared governance models on all units
  • Hires, develops, mentors, coaches and supervises team members and direct reports
  • Counsels and develops nursing managers and employees
  • Works with management teams to address staff grievances or concerns
  • Actively develops emerging nurse leaders to ensure solid succession planning
  • Ensures that clinical managers and other leaders within the division function as an effective team
  • Works collaboratively with department administrators to engage medical staff in efficient unit operations and productivity
  • Develops multiple annual department budgets to meet designated targets
  • Develops capital budget priorities for assigned programs
  • Monitors productivity reports and financial performance and takes necessary corrective action
  • Collaborates with managers to review benchmarks and implement staffing plans to ensure adequate staffing levels and optimized resource utilization
  • Plans annual program quality improvement projects and implements improvements
  • Oversees quarterly or periodic progress reports on QI performance monitors and dashboards
  • Plans and directs improvement initiatives for assigned programs
  • Allocates resources to support managers and medical directors on unit-specific initiatives
  • Collaborates with EHR teams to improve effectiveness of documentation
  • Models customer service standards at all times
  • Uses data to prioritize quality improvement efforts to maximize impact on patient care improvements
  • Oversees infrastructure and ensures programs meet all regulatory standards in a continual readiness framework
  • Ensures that program staff are trained in all areas of compliance (TJC, DOH, etc.)
  • In the absence of the Associate Chief Nursing Officer, carries out those duties
  • Serves as Administrator on Call when designated

    Position Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Health Care Administration, or a related healthcare/science field
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Health Services Administration
  • An active RN license in Washington State
  • 5 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in an academic medical center
  • Demonstrated competence in financial management, clinical management, and practice management
  • Comfortable and conversant with tools and techniques associated with process improvements and change management
  • Successful track record of effective management, including program management
  • Credible presence with a professional image
