Position Summary:
FAU Harbor Branch, located in Ft. Pierce, is a research institute focusing on marine science and oceanography with over 200 scientists, staff and students that work and study at the site.
Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Biological Scientist - Fort Pierce, FL.
Summary of responsibilities include:
  • Calibrate, deploy, maintain, clean, and troubleshoot continuously operating water quality datasondes in a bio-fouling marine environment according to current IRLO SOPs.
  • Perform discrete sampling, which will include preparation of sample containers and standard laboratory analysis of samples according to current IRLO SOPs.
  • Conduct computer data entry and analysis of data.
  • Conduct sea-grass sampling and algal monitoring at regular intervals, including preparation/organization, sample processing, and data entry.
  • Maintain an accurate instrument and chemical inventory and timely ordering of supplies.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Biology/Biological Sciences or related area of specialization and one year experience required.

Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and managers.

Must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain within 30 days.

Driver's License must be maintained as part of the job requirement.

The position may require some weekend and/or evening work in addition to regular work hours.

Ability to lift heavy equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Scientific principles and field techniques involved with sampling physical, chemical and biological parameters in coastal environments, especially in relation to water quality, marine plants and associated invertebrate fauna.

Must be able to work with basic computer software, statistical software, and geographic information systems for data analysis.

Must be able to handle trailering, driving, and working with small boats including snorkeling.

Ability to work in the field with various types of weather.

Ability to troubleshoot technical equipment.
Salary:
$18.20 - $19.64 per hour.

Work Days and Hours:
Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Occasional work outside of normal schedule for field work as needed.
