Job description
The mission of Eagle Mount Billings is to create meaningful experiences for people with disabilities through adaptive recreation. Families that include children with disabilities are more likely to live in poverty. The impacts, according to research findings published in Impacts of Poverty on Quality of Life in Families of Children with Disabilities, include less access to health care, delayed cognitive development, and limited leisure opportunities as well as increased stress, low self-esteem, and inconsistent parenting. In Yellowstone County, over six percent of youth ages 5-17, have a disability (https://mtdh.ruralinstitute.umt.edu/). Many of the youth Eagle Mount serves are living in poverty; and special needs associated with disabilities often present extraordinary expenses. While Medicaid and Medicare typically ensure access to basic healthcare, most families that include a child with disabilities have no discretionary dollars. Research demonstrates that children and young adults with disabilities benefit from interventions that enhance their self-esteem and independence, increase their exposure to recreational and vocational opportunities, and offer opportunities for successful community interactions. The benefits in the immediate for children engaged in Eagle Mount programs include increased skills, self-esteem, social competencies, and friendships. In the long term, participants realize more fully developed physical and cognitive gains, vocational skill development, decreased social isolation and enhanced self-sustainability. Through meaningful summer enrichment activities, offered on a sliding fee scale, the financial burden on families and caregivers is lessened, and critical respite services are put in place. Over time, involvement in these programs strengthens the overall wellbeing of youth with disabilities and families, leading to more opportunities that support a sustainable path out of poverty.
