Truck Driver/General Laborer Description:

The Truck Driver/Laborer position is responsible for picking up food, pallets, paper goods, pet food, supplies, and other needed items from vendors/donor locations and delivering them to SVdP local dining hall and food pantries. Drivers/Laborers are the “face of St. Vincent de Paul” in the field and must be polite and professional by acknowledging the donors and partners with a warm greeting, professional manner, and gracious appreciation for all donations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Driver/Laborer Responsibilities:

Drives and/or assists with loading/unloading a 14’ and/or 17’ truck with a capacity of 1 ton to pick up and deliver food and paper products.

  • Follows the direction of the management personnel as instructed and works independently without direct supervision when on the road.
  • Maintains radio/telephone contact with Dining Hall Director to receive instructions, report a donation non-pickup, or receive new pickup requests.
  • Contacts the donor/vendor on the day of pickup and confirms pickup time and note pertinent information on the route sheet.
  • Loads/unloads truck manually in a safe manner, lifting/carrying up to 75 lbs.+, using proper lifting techniques and company-approved tools, for heavy items, boxes, or pallets.
  • Load, secure and protect products in delivery vehicles and safely transport merchandise without damage.
  • Loads cardboard, aluminum, and other recyclable items for delivery to the recycling center.
  • Understands and acknowledges that all property picked up is the property of St. Vincent de Paul.
  • Immediately reports all accidents or incidents involving company equipment, including all moving violations received in a company vehicle and personal vehicle to the manager.
  • Performs work required in a timely manner to meet assigned schedule.
  • Presents a professional image to donors and staff by wearing a clean SVDP shirt or vest, as well as in performance and communication.
  • Communicates to DH Director any concerns/issues regarding donor pickups, truck issues, and/or truck crew job performance.
  • Responsible for daily cleaning and maintenance of the interior of the truck cab.
  • Works as a team with the other SVdP staff members and entities, if applicable, and shares responsibilities such as coordinating assignments with other SVdP buildings/programs, routing daily delivery/pick-up schedules, etc.
  • Some warehouse organization and merchandise stocking responsibilities.
  • Additional general labor duties as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reports/Equipment Responsibilities:

  • Cleans cab and sweeps out truck and trailer. Inspects truck and reports needed repairs.
  • Checks fluids and fuels as needed.
  • Returns SVDP tools (dollies, ladders, etc.) to proper storage and reports to manager items needed for repair or missing.
  • Keeps accurate records of pickups and deliveries.
  • Unloads, inspects, and/or stocks items as directed each day.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Candidate must be at least 21 years old with a valid OH state driver’s license and satisfactory MVR (driving record).
  • Reliable personal transportation to Warren locations is required.
  • 2 plus years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experienced driving a one-ton 14’ box truck, using proper loading, and unloading techniques for maximum use of space and limited damage. If/when personal auto is used, mileage will be reimbursed.
  • Ability to work weekdays and occasional Saturdays.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and drug screen for employment.
  • Experienced in managing competing demands and able to adapt to the situation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experienced in mapping a delivery route or using routing apps.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or carry up to 75 pounds as the candidate will be carrying food boxes and other products each day.
  • The employee is regularly required to walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear.
  • The employee is required to stand and sit frequently.
  • An employee’s initial 90 calendar days of employment is an introductory/probationary period.
  • Starting wage is $12.00 - $14.00/hr.
