Day Shift; 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM

On-Call and Weekend, work may be required

Position Summary:
The Surgical Technician - Certified, under the supervision of an RN, provides technical support to the Operating Room team including anticipating surgeons' instrumentation and equipment needs, set-up and take-down of operating rooms and equipment, restocking of supplies stored in hub, and instrument maintenance.

Education:
High school graduate or equivalency.

Licensure/Certification:
Certified by the Association of Surgical Technologists, The National Board of Surgical Technology, the Surgical Assisting Liaison Council Certificate of Surgical Technology or the National Center for Competency Testing is required. BLS card is required from the American Heart Association.

Required Work Experience:
Completion of a Surgical Technologist training program including clinical experience.

Six months or greater of recent Operating Room experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Requires reading to understand or verify accuracy (e.g., check spelling, grammar, simple editing, etc.).
Requires writing to record basic information (e.g., filling out forms, taking messages, etc.).
Requires use of basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
Employee demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit as indicated by the following:
Demonstrates ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs.
Identifies the physical, motor, sensory, cognitive, and psychosocial characteristics for age group(s) served.
Demonstrates age-appropriate communication skills.
Demonstrates ability to provide the care needed as described in the job description and the department's scope of service for the patient groups under his/her care.
Age group(s) served will be one or more of the following: Infant (Birth to 12 months), Child (13 months to 12 years), Adolescent (13 years to 17 years), Adult (18 years to 69 years) or Geriatric (70 years and older).
Prepares the equipment and instrumentation needed for each OR case. Properly transports maintain and stores instruments and equipment.
Provides a safe environment for the patients through adhering to policies regarding instrument, sponge and needle/sharps counts, electrocautery grounding, and electrical equipment operation and maintenance.
Maintains aseptic technique in setting up instrument table and intraoperatively to reduce patients' risk of infection.
Has access to clean supply areas including, but not limited to IV solutions, needles, syringes for the purpose of obtaining and restocking linen and / or supplies.
Verifies with the RN any medication placed on the sterile field, labels medication, and verbalizes the medication to the surgeon.
Identifies surgical specimens and assures specimen is given to circulator with correct identification.
Assists with positioning and transporting patients of various sizes and weights, as needed.
Participates in blood product retrieval and transport.
Assists in maintaining and restocking supplies, uses supplies appropriately and judiciously and provides input into cost reduction of supplies.
Assists with orientation of new OR personnel.
Assists with education process for Surgical Technician students completing clinical training at Howard County.
Uses appropriate lines of communication and maintains patient confidentiality.
Adheres to policies and procedures of the Hospital and the nursing division.
Performs any other duties as requested to meet patient care demands and the need of the Hospital.
