JOB SUMMARY: Chaplain Resident

Provide quality pastoral care in supporting the spiritual needs of patients/families/ staff and enhance identity and competency as a Chaplain Resident in clinical pastoral education/ pastoral care. Chaplain Residents are accountable to the Sr. Program Manager of Clinical Pastoral Education/ ACPE Certified Educator. This position is expected to last one year September 5, 2023 – August 30, 2024. This residency includes three full units of ACPE-accredited clinical pastoral education and offers advanced training in clinical pastoral care.

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
CPE curriculum at Vanderbilt University Medical Center emphasizes pastoral relationships and integration of head and heart. CPE curriculum integrates personal history, behavioral sciences, theology, spiritual direction and professional development. Spiritual care staff, clinical specialists, professional advisory group and community members lend their experience in their areas of specialty and interest.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Participate in individual and group supervision;
  • Complete required readings and written materials;
  • Provide effective spiritual and emotional care for patients/families/staff, including grief work, crisis care, and care for the dying, in a cross-cultural environment;
  • Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team and engage in interdisciplinary exchange;
  • Lead worship and/or spirituality/ staff support group;
  • Conduct memorial services and, on occasion, blessings or dedications of areas of the institution;
  • Participate in the on-call/on-duty schedule with pastoral care staff;
  • Participate in Clinical Pastoral Education Dept/ Spiritual Care staff meetings
REQUIREMENT(S): A theological degree at the master’s level from an accredited theological school, or equivalent. One prior unit of ACPE-accredited CPE.
PREFERENCE: Master of Divinity and ordination or commission to function in ministry/ pastoral care or in the process toward ordination or commission are preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/STRENGTHS NEEDED & PHYSICAL DEMANDS Movement Occasional: Sitting: Remaining in seated position, Standing: Remaining on one's feet without moving., Walking: Moving about on foot., Lifting under 35 lbs: Raising and lowering objects under 35 lbs from one level to another, Push/Pull: Exerting force to move objects away from or toward., Bending/Stooping: Trunk bending downward and forward by bending spine at waist requiring full use of lower extremities and back muscles, Reaching below shoulders: Extending arms in any direction below shoulders., Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with hand or hands. Sensory Occasional: Vision: Clarity of near vision at 20 inches or less and far vision at 20 feet or more with depth perception, peripheral vision, color vision. Frequent: Noise: May include exposure to occupational noise levels which equal or exceed an 8-hr time-weighted average of 85 decibels, requiring enrollment in VUMC's Hearing Conservation Program which includes training, use of hearing protection, and periodic audiometry. Note: CPE Residents are employed to be CPE residents in the ACPE accredited program by the hospital and therefore must meet all of VUMC’s standards for employment. Residents experience clinical assignments that provide in-depth exposure to specialty areas, enabling each resident to become an integral part of the health care team within the Departments of Clinical Pastoral Education & Spiritual and Pastoral Care. CPE Residents function with a high degree of autonomy and accountability. They participate in all aspects of the ministry of the Departments of Clinical Pastoral Education & Spiritual and Pastoral Care, including participating fully in the 24/7 spiritual care coverage cycle. This means that residents will be on-call a substantial amount of time during the year, at least 4 times per month - including overnights on weekdays and weekends as well as working full shifts on weekend days as needed.
The CPE Residency Program is a rigorous course of study and professional training. Residents should demonstrate a high commitment and interest in pursuing such intensive pastoral care training and must be able to clearly articulate their professional goals and motivation for the intensive training.
This Residency position is not expected to last beyond one year. There are no guarantees of continued employment, either within the term or when the term ends.

Master's Degree (or equivalent experience) and 1 year relevant experience
