Job description

Rodale Institute seeks an experienced Climate Scientist with expertise in measuring and modeling ecosystem services, especially soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions, from nature-based climate solutions and value chains within the food and fiber industry. Regenerative organic agriculture has been posited as a ready-to-implement solution to the climate crisis by both reducing emissions related to food production but also capturing carbon and storing it in the soil. The Climate Scientist will play an integral part in adding to the body of knowledge related to climate solutions through implementation of food production and distribution strategies. This position reports directly to the Chief Scientist and will be located at the main campus in Kutztown, PA.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for developing a research program to measure and model the effects of regenerative organic agriculture, sustainable food systems, and food distribution networks on greenhouse gas budgets and ecosystem services.
  • Utilize data generated in long-term systems trials and other field trials to verify and improve climate models related to food production.
  • Assist other scientists in analyzing novel approaches to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
  • Work with existing partners to analyze greenhouse gas emissions of food related value chains from farm to fork.
  • Support the Rodale Institute consultancy programs to measure the impacts of transitioning farmers to certified organic production.
  • Analyze and interpret scientific data using appropriate tools including statistics, life-cycle analysis, modeling, etc.
  • Write and manage grants with internal and external partners to advance our understanding of regenerative organic agricultural systems.
  • Oversee the timely execution of grant funded projects, including budget management, timeline management, data organization, and instructing field and lab technicians.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in a related field - Math, Computational Sciences, Earth Science, Soil Science, Environmental Science

  • Proven interest/background in organic and/or regenerative production practices or sustainable food systems.
  • Strong evidence of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • History of grant solicitation.
  • Interest and ability in working, collaborating, and communicating in a team environment with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
