Job Description

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for a full-time, nine-month, Computer Science faculty position in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Responsibilities include teaching college level courses in Computer Science and/or Information Systems Technology. Faculty members teach approximately 15 credits per semester for a total of approximately 30 credits per academic year. This workload may include face-to-face and hybrid/distance learning courses during the day and evening, on weekdays and weekends. In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise students, serve on college committees, and participate in other activities that support the mission of the college. Such activities may include, but are not limited to, departmental meetings and curriculum planning, programmatic assessment, course and program evaluation, community service, club sponsorship, student recruitment and retention activities, and mentoring new and part-time faculty.

Candidates selected for an interview will conduct a 10-15 minute teaching demonstration on a pre-selected topic. Additional details will be provided when interviews are scheduled.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a closely related field.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Proficiency in all paradigms of programming including low level, procedural, object-oriented and functional programming. Mastery of at least one object-oriented language.
  • Experience in database theory and handling large datasets and data analytics.
  • Familiarity with low-level computer assembly language and architecture including multi-level machine organization, processors, instruction, execution, addressing techniques, data representation and digital logic.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • A commitment to encouraging and fostering student success.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate coursework beyond the Masters level in Computer Science or a closely related field.
  • Teaching experience at the community college level.
  • Experience with online instruction.
  • Experience with developing and teaching Python, Java, JavaScript, PHP.
  • Industry recognized certifications in security, programming, database, networking or similar. Demonstrated leadership experience in higher education such as serving as department chair or program director.
  • History of working with public and private industry in a computer science related capacity.
  • Curriculum development and/or grant writing experience.
