Basic Function

Do you want to work with agricultural crops in the field, glasshouse and laboratory? Teagasc are seeking a crop technician to support our new research project, EVOLVE, which will address the need for integrated weed management techniques along with examining the impact of soil cultivation on carbon release. The successful candidate will become part of the project team including researchers and post graduate students, providing technical support in the field, glasshouse and laboratory, across a range of tasks.

Background

The tillage sector in Ireland utilises approximately 300,000ha to produce a range of arable crops and underpins the agri-industry through the provision of energy and protein feedstuffs, and raw material for drink and food products. The aim of the Teagasc Crop Science work programme is to support profitable and sustainable crop production and this programme is implemented by a team of researchers, technicians and other support staff. The programme consists of collaborative time-bound projects, frequently working with university partners, which deliver on specific research topics. A key current challenge is weed control including the evolution of herbicide resistance and this is having an impact on the adoption of carbon-smart crop establishment systems. The EVOLVE project is a DAFM funded project, led byTeagasc with UCD and TCD as collaborators. It will generate new knowledge on herbicide resistance evolution, integrated grass weed control and carbon-smart tillage practices. The project has significant field and glasshouse studies, along with some laboratory work, associated with it.

Job Objectives

  • To provide technical support to the field, glasshouse and laboratory research programme of the EVOLVE project.

  • To assist in the design, establishment, and management of field trials associated with integrated weed management techniques and crop establishment.

  • To provide technical support in herbicide resistance screening in glasshouse experiments including weed seed propogation, treatment and measurement.

  • To assist in laboratory work associated with understanding the molecular mechanisms that underpin herbicide resistance evolution in weed species .

  • To carefully collect, check, process and store measurement data associated with all of the experiments and field trials.

  • To assist in grower surveys, including grass-weed identification, seed collection and management data recording.

  • To actively work as part of a team including researchers, post-doc and PhD students, in all tasks but with individual responsibility for components of the work.

  • Ensure that research tasks are completed on time and to the required standard to ensure high quality data is produced for use in scientific and technical publications, theses and for grower advice.

  • Health & Safety Co-ordinator Duties or such other Health & Safety Duties as may be assigned from time to time.

  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.

  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.

  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

  • This job specification is intended as a guide to the general range of duties and is intended to be neither definitive nor restrictive. It will be reviewed from time to time with the post holder.
