Job Summary:
The University of San Francisco School of Law invites applications for the position of Director of the Dorraine Zief Law Library. The Dorraine Zief Law Library supports the research needs of the students, faculty, and alumni of the Law School and of the University, as well as members of the State Bar of California. It is part of a modern, technologically advanced 60,000 square foot building featuring a comfortable, flexible, fully accessible research and study environment with 378 seats and technology-equipped group study rooms. The Library currently contains over 170,000 titles.

Currently, the Library's staff consists of an Interim Director who also teaches and provides research librarian services, 3 full-time librarians, one research librarian fellow, and 4 full-time support staff positions. The Interim Director, and 2 research librarians all teach stand-alone, for-credit research courses. The Interim Director, research librarians and research librarian fellow all hold or are in the process of completing both JD and MLS / MLIS (or equivalent) degrees.

Full Job Description:

The Position

The Director aligns library services with the law school's curriculum, ongoing initiatives, and the community's research needs. The Director's principal responsibilities are managing the law library and providing information resources in appropriate formats to faculty and students. The Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of library operation and administration, including strategic planning; budgeting; hiring, training, and supervising library staff; collection development; space planning; and developing and implementing technology to support library services. Additionally, the Director actively participates in the intellectual life of the law school, engaging in scholarly / professional development activities and teaching as needed and as time permits. The Director is responsible for ensuring that the library meets the accreditation standards of the American Bar Association as they relate to law libraries and the membership requirements of the Association of American Law Schools. The Director is encouraged to participate in the American Association of Law Libraries and other law library and professional organizations. The Director also works collaboratively with the University Library and the University Library Dean.

The Director reports to the Law School Dean and is an active participant in law school administration. USF Law is committed to providing the Director with job security and academic freedom. The term of this appointment is five years. The Director will be evaluated at least annually as well as at the end of four years. Applicants who meet the requirements for tenure / tenure track will be further reviewed by the Faculty Appointments Committee.

Required

The successful candidate will have:
  • a JD from an ABA-accredited law school and an MLS (or equivalent) from an ALA- accredited graduate program.
  • 11-15 years of professional library experience with a substantial and consistent record of innovation, leadership, management, and strategic vision, within an academic law library setting.

The successful candidate must also:
  • Understand and be committed to USF's mission, vision, and values.
  • Display a strong commitment to the law school's institutional mission, objectives and needs as well as a strong commitment to faculty and student research and scholarship.
  • Demonstrate experience with or the ability to work with a diverse student body, faculty and staff, and possess a strong equity lens, cultural humility and a proven ability to work well in a diverse context.
  • Demonstrate in-depth experience in teaching and legal research instruction.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in establishing and maintaining operational budgets.
  • Support the incorporation of educational technology into the law library's teaching and training activities.
  • Develop and promote innovative strategies for acquisition and library services, including strategies that take advantage of technology.
  • Develop and promote innovative strategies for new uses of building spaces, including by showing initiative and flexibility regarding the reworking of spaces made obsolete by new practices / technologies.
  • Build successful and strong relationships with the law school's faculty, students, and staff.
  • Encourage and promote teamwork and communication with both internal and external constituencies, emphasizing flexibility and collaboration.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to involving staff in addressing problems and solutions, and be able to foster a sense of investment and ownership in the library's mission and challenges.
  • Value professional development and facilitate and encourage the law library staff's continued professional development.
  • Nurture and build relationships with the University generally and the University's library.
