Director, Risk Control - Middle Market Solutions
Job description
Primary functions of this position include assisting underwriting in risk prequalification, assessment and selection; identifying/guiding customer service needs and developing appropriate service plans; managing agreed upon account activities, expenses and relationships; monitoring and maintaining risk control services in accordance with regulatory requirements; and developing/delivering risk control information that assists Underwriting and clients in understanding, evaluating and controlling exposures. Responsibilities include conducting on-site technical risk assessments, develops and administers risk management and loss prevention support and validation of control measures. Vertical market focus areas include Real Estate and Hospitality, Private Equity, Financial Institutions and Professional Services, and Healthcare.
- The primary function of this position is to support the placement of profitable insurance.
- Work collaboratively with Underwriting to review risk submissions to ensure that they include adequate information to complete a meaningful risk evaluation based on contemplated program coverages.
- Provide Underwriting with a risk assessment of typical workers’ compensation, general liability, and auto liability exposures based on expected loss frequency and severity for specific risks.
- Based on review of loss experience/history, and through loss analysis activities, provide the Underwriter feedback on how well a specific risk mirrors expected loss performance for both new business and renewals.
- Identifies/investigates background of specific accidents/claims that represent atypical occurrences.
- Provide underwriter with information on identified exposures that may be atypical or unexpected for the specific risk versus class of risk based on operations, products, or services.
- Provide underwriter with information on catastrophic exposures contemplated by class of risk, geographical location, nature of occupancy, employee/third party concentration.
- Respond to specific underwriter questions and provide support on Technical/scientific (safety standards or operational processes), emerging liabilities (i.e., occupational disease or toxic torts).
- Support account profitability by identifying appropriate risk control services, activities, and/or interventions.
- Support account acquisition through general marketing and account specific sales presentations. Provide pre-renewal monitoring and feedback to underwriter.
- Perform work at many different locations involving frequent travel (Average 30% - 50%).
Customer Service -
- Differentiate Arch Risk Control Solutions via strategic risk management philosophy and approach.
- When appropriate, negotiate service specifications or customer service needs expressed in marketing or prequalification meetings with the producer and/or account to identify customer needs and develop service proposal and pricing for inclusion in underwriter proposal.
- Assist in building, maintaining and delivering established vendor services in accordance with technical and financial requirements.
- When required respond to customer service requests, meeting agreed upon needs and building customer relationships to support account retention.
- Act as a technical resource to encourage best practices.
Account Management -
- Manage agreed upon account relationships to meet or exceed expectations.
- Build and maintain trusted advisor relationships with clients, producers, underwriters, and other team partners.
- Monitor assigned account risk control activities to ensure that service and financial outcomes are delivered in accordance with agreed upon criteria.
- Monitor significant claims activity and get involved as appropriate to minimize future potential.
- As necessary, participate in claim reviews.
Regulatory Compliance -
- Ensure that risk control activities are administered in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Ensure that processes are set up to issue the necessary notices in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Acquire/retain the necessary documentation when customers choose to reject offered risk control services.
- Administer requested services in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Maintain necessary files in accordance with regulatory requirements to respond to inquiries and audit activities.
Communications -
- Represent Arch Risk Control Solutions in industry/trade group presentations and/or written articles.
- Deliver a consultative approach to clients focused on value based deliverables.
- Submit, as needed, Risk Control information on appropriate internal sites.
- Prepare technical information sheets for internal/external use on current topics of interest for clients and internal partners.
- Technical Job Knowledge - broad risk based industry background; risk management skills, risk control disciplines (ergo, IH, etc.); broad based background and understanding of casualty insurance coverages (workers compensation, auto liability, and strong skills in general and products liability); risk control regulatory & compliance issues and property experience (preferred).

- Ability for frequent travel throughout the United States to service multi-state accounts and participate in internal meetings and industry functions.
- 7+years of Risk Control/Risk Management experience (a broad background with experience in diverse industries including insurance), prior experience with Private Equity, Real Estate, Financial Institutions and Healthcare Industries is highly desirable, experience in Property Risk Control also highly desirable.
- Bachelor's Degree in a Risk Management, Safety, Engineering, or related Technical Discipline.
- Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations: CSP or other professional designation; additional industry-specific study and designations (such as CPCU, ARM or ALCM) a plus.
