Engineering Technician
Job description
This position is located within the Division of Soil and Water Conservation, Engineering Services Section. This section assists local soil and water conservation districts and private landowners to protect soil resources, improve water quality, and conserve/protect water resources. Assistance is provided in the areas of watershed protection, animal waste management, and engineering support for the implementation of conservation practices.
The position provides engineering surveys for the planning, design, and construction of projects that support the natural resources conservation and management objectives of Soil and Water Conservation Districts and Division programs such as the Agriculture Water Resource Assistance Program, Agriculture Cost Share Program, and the Community Conservation Assistance Program. Additionally, the position develops site maps and other drawings using CAD software. The position also provides technical assistance to the Natural Resources Conservation Service field offices and other local state and federal agencies, upon request.
Tasks will include performing engineering field surveys for hydrographic and topographic maps. Field tasks will be performed using conventional survey equipment (total station and data collector) and global positioning systems (real-time- kinetic). Office work will include downloading and reduction of data into files that will be imported into CAD and GIS Software. This position is expected to create base maps in CAD for use by engineers. Responsibilities also include for planning, production including CAD detailing, and quality control of projects. Construction observation will also be required to ensure projects are implemented per plans and specifications. This position may be required to assist the CREP survey crew in performing surveys for easement acquisition periodically.
The technician will rely on other Division and District staff availability to assist in fieldwork or perform single person surveys when site conditions permit. Work is accomplished under the supervision of an Engineer.
Normal work hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
This position will be headquartered in Mocksville, NC but work will be done statewide.

- Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex surveys.
- Experience in use of survey instruments such as total stations, GNSS receivers, or data collectors/recorders.
- Knowledge of conservation/best management practices.
- Ability to assist in the development of management alternatives and recommendations.
- Computer experience including AutoCAD, AutoDesk Civil 3d, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
- Effective project and time management skills.
- Excellent oral and written skills to facilitate discussion with various organizations, agencies, and the public, often with conflicting goals.
- Ability to travel throughout assigned region and statewide, may include some overnight travel.
- Valid driver’s license.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
- Successful completion of college level coursework in Engineering, Biological Sciences, or related field with a concentration/emphasis in Environmental or Agricultural topics.
- Work experience in management of diverse projects and/or staff.
Associate's degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
