    Position Title: English Learner (EL) Teacher

    Assignment Location: Various locations across Dakota County, MN supporting the Secondary Program and Special Education Programs

    Hours per Day: 8.0

    Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, following the assigned school calendar

    Anticipated Start Date: August 22, 2023

    Assignment Length: 2023 - 2024 school year, continuing contract

    Salary: Placement per the teacher contract, based on education and experience


    POSITION OVERVIEW:

    Under the supervision of the Director of Teaching and Learning, the english learner teacher for Intermediate School District 917 performs intermediate professional work developing and implementing effective instructional and lesson plans with students who are English learners within the school community, implementing student evaluation processes,and collaborating with parents and staff to meet the needs of students. Professionalism, empathy, and a non-judgmental approach are essential when working with students receiving special education services to ensure their safety and growth and to help them understand and exhibit appropriate behaviors at school and in the community. The special education teacher will be stepping into a team environment daily, where collaboration, communication, and adaptability are key to the success of the individual, the team, and the success of the students. The teacher role is performed following District policy and State/Federal Laws.


    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials according to effective teaching strategies and District philosophy and vision and implements instruction.
    • Completes evaluations on students; maintains appropriate files and records.
    • Communicates with parents in a timely manner; maintains positive and constructive communication with students, staff, parents and community.
    • Serves as an advocate for Students with English language needs by representing their needs to parents, and staff.
    • Provides indirect services through teacher consultation and evaluation review.
    • Recognizes learning problems and makes referrals as appropriate; encourages student enthusiasm for the learning process and development of good study habits and techniques.
    • Works cooperatively with parents and other staff members to reinforce the educational program for each student.
    • Attends and participates in various meetings, committees, conferences and workshops as required.
    • Other duties, as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • A bachelor’s degree with coursework in education or related field, and a current teaching license from the Professional Educators Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) in English as a Second Language, or equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
    • Willingness and ability to work with students receiving a high-level of special education services.
    • Thorough knowledge of education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; with knowledge of special education practices preferred.
    • Previous teaching experience in EL preferred.
    • Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication that is maintained during high-stress and crisis situations.
    • Basic computer and email skills. Proficient in core educational subject areas.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Frequently requires exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, standing, speaking, hearing, sitting, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions.
    • Occasionally requires exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and crouching.
    • Work has standard vision requirements.
    • Ability to tolerate sudden jarring movement.
    • Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may require wearing of personal protective equipment.
    • Locations are generally moderately noisy.

    Intermediate School District 917 provides special education, career & technical education (CTE), and/or alternative learning for nine member districts in the south metro. Our programs are located in more than 20 sites throughout the south metro, including Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) where our district office is located.
