Job Summary

Duration:

Temporary contract post, the indicative duration of which is 11 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Basic Function

The appointee will be responsible for the day to day management of a large pasture based spring calving dairy herd and associated dairy farm staff, which includes the delivery of the research programme as outlined in the AGRIC research programme. This will include grassland management, breeding and reproduction, animal health and welfare, milk quality, health and safety, as well as data collection and dissemination of results where necessary.

The post is based at Ballyhaise Agricultural College, Co. Cavan. Ballyhaise College is located 8km north of Cavan town and is situated on an estate of 220 hectares of grass and woodlands.

Job Objectives

  • Daily management of a large dairy herd including herd health and welfare, grassland management, breeding and calving season cow management

  • Daily management/supervision of farm staff operations and liaising with research staff to deliver the BMW region dairy research programme including the realisation of experimental objectives and protocols

  • Manage both the livestock and grassland management of the experimental herds and co-ordinate the collection on details animal and grassland system performance research data

  • Experimental recording and database management, including health and safety

  • Health & Safety Co-ordinator Duties or such other Health & Safety Duties as may be assigned from time to time.

  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.

  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.

  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

  • Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

At the time of applying, candidates must have

  • A Level 6 in agriculture or a related discipline.


  • A Level 7 qualification in Agriculture would be a distinct advantage

  • Basic laboratory skills


Knowledge


  • Grassbased dairy production systems

  • Computer systems relating to dairy herd management

As this role will involve travel between Teagasc centres around the country, the candidates must have their own car and must also satisfy and continue to satisfy during employment with Teagasc, legal requirements to drive unaccompanied on Irish public roads.



Eligibility


This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
