We are searching for individuals who enjoy working in an outdoor environment and are interested in studying plants on an active military training base. The position requires that technicians learn to identify plants and measure their height, density, structure, percent cover, and carrying capacity for grazing animals. Technicians will use electronic data collectors to gather information in the field and transfer it to a GIS cloud storage system for analysis and recommendations to Camp Williams’ leadership.
This is a seasonal position that will start at the
beginning
of May and finish at the end of August.
Principal Duties
As a Grazing Technician, you will:
- Learn to identify common plants at Camp Williams.
- Learn how to key out unknown plants using tools and resources available.
- Learn how to use several measuring and monitoring techniques for plants.
- Learn how to record the data gathered onto standard forms and incorporate it into a GIS database system.
- Learn how to work together with other natural resource Technicians to meet common goals.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess:
- An appreciation for the outdoors.
- The ability to dress for and withstand all types of outdoor weather; including hot sunny days, cold blustery days, windy conditions, dust, rain, and snow.
- A knowledge of common plants (flora) of Utah county rangelands.
- Classroom and field knowledge of flora identification, phenology, and response to disturbance (fire and grazing).
- A knowledge of grazing principles.
- The ability to traverse rough terrain, walk long distances, jump or climb over obstacles.
- Experience with livestock such as cattle and sheep.
- A pleasant personality, and ability to communicate well with others.
- A valid state driver’s license.

This position pays well for a season/summer position. There will be plenty of opportunities to get into the outdoors and breathe fresh air. You will have opportunities to get some daily exercise plus use the gym facilities on base as part of your daily routine. You will be trained in operating ATV and UTV machines. You will become part of a small but close-knit team striving to make a positive difference in the environment. You will get to see how a productive ecosystem is important to the military’s readiness and training program.
