Special Information:

This is a full-time, year-round position. Normal office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, but hours will vary and will include field work throughout the year.

The successful applicant will be based in Kalispell at the FWP Region One HQ.

Kalispell is adynamic community located within a thirty-minute drive of Flathead Lake, Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort, Glacier National Park, several National and State forests and parks, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness area. Kalispell is the retail, professional, medical, and governmental center of Northwest Montana with a valley-wide population approaching 100,000. The office for this position is located within the Regional Headquarters building, located at 490 N. Meridian Rd., Kalispell. The regional Headquarters is a wellmaintained office building which houses all of the regional divisions including, Parks, Fisheries, Enforcement, Wildlife, Communication and Education, Technology Services, and Administration.

This position is funded through a grant. In the event that the funding ends or is not sufficient to continue your employment, your employment may be terminated without cause.

Job Duties:

This position requires substantial field work that is often carried out alone in rugged terrain during unpredictable and inclement weather conditions. Hours of work are often long and irregular and include evening meetings and occasional weekend work. It also requires a substantial amount of office work in a busy office environment with frequent distractions where it is important, but difficult to concentrate. The responsibilities of this position are broad and require a diverse skill set. The incumbent must be skilled at integrating their own professional expertise with that of other professional disciplines and public desires to develop approaches that are biologically successful and publicly acceptable. Incumbent must be able to lift 40 lbs.

The Habitat Restoration Coordinator initiates, oversees, implements, and evaluates a variety of actions designed to offset fish and wildlife losses caused by hydropower operation of Libby Dam in the Kootenai River watershed. The incumbent will develop and implement innovative research mitigation projects to improve habitat, increase targeted populations and monitor response to these activities. Within this context, the incumbent is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating on-the-ground activities that protect, maintain and restore productive fish and wildlife in the Kootenai River drainage. All actions must be consistent with the NPCC's Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife Program, the Endangered Species Act, the Montana and National Environmental Policy Acts, and other applicable state and federal laws.

The Habitat Restoration Coordinator will perform this work by reviewing professional literature to help them with the design, implementation and evaluation of these projects. They will be required to establish field protocols, purchase needed supplies and contract labor as needed through approved agency protocols. They must be capable of designing, collecting and analyzing field-based data using a variety of appropriate technologies and constantly striving to develop new or improved techniques to achieve project objectives and minimize costs. In conjunction with collaborators and FWP staff, the incumbent will design and implement special studies and investigations to obtain new or more detailed information to interpret and understand problems with specific species; including condition, trend, and ecological health of habitats for all species of wildlife.

Minimum Qualifications:

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, fish and wildlife management, animal ecology, biology, or a closely related field and some related work experience. Combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
