The Office of Legislative Services (OLS) is an agency of the New Jersey Legislature established by law to provide professional, nonpartisan staff support services to the Legislature including its officers, members, committees and commissions. OLS operates under the authority of the Legislative Services Commission, a 16-member bipartisan panel with equal representation from each House of the Legislature.

The goal of OLS is to facilitate the work of the New Jersey Legislature and to enable and promote public understanding of the legislative process. As nonpartisan employees of the Legislature, OLS staff are prohibited from engaging in political activity or taking a public position with regard to any matter before the Legislature.

Description: Under the direction of an Operations Manager or Senior Operations Manager, performs repairs, replacements, and adjustments to all types of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and HVACR systems and operates these systems when required.

Duties include: conduct daily operations and repairs of building computerized HVACR systems and mechanical equipment and coordinates with maintenance staff to resolve problems, make needed repairs and/or replace metal and flexible ducts, louvers, dampers, and piping to HVAC units, replace chilled and hot water control valves, supply and return piping, insulation, and HVAC air units, perform preventative maintenance including but not limited to the replacement of filters, compressors, thermostats, sheaves, cooling coils, chilled and hot water control valves on all HVAC, return fans, exhaust fans, and all associated equipment, overhaul pumps, repair and replace bearings, shafts, sleeves gaskets, and packing as required, test and analyze mechanical equipment to generate a report on the finding of equipment failure, and perform other building and grounds related duties as required.

Requirements

Education:

· Completion of an HVAC trade certification or license course.

Experience:

• This position is entry level.

Substitution:

· Applicants who do not have an HVAC trade certification or license may substitute additional experience and must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in maintenance of non-automotive equipment or trades work consisting of carpentry, electric, plumbing, HVAC, or building automation.

Driver’s License:

· Possession of a driver's license valid in New Jersey is required, as the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Lifting Requirement:

• Ability to move items weighing up to 50 pounds in a safe and effective manner is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Background Check: Newly hired employees will be subject to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting.

Residency Law: Pursuant to the “New Jersey First Act,” all persons newly hired by the Office of Legislative Services, unless exempted by the law, shall have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. New Jersey State employees hired prior to September 1, 2011 who transfer from another State of New Jersey appointing authority without a break in service greater than seven days but who reside outside the State of New Jersey are not required to change their principal residence to New Jersey in order to comply with the Act.
