This position of Laboratory Assistant is designed to manage all instructional and research laboratories in CET. The Laboratory Assistant is part of a team that is responsible for preparing and equipping all laboratories in the College. This includes the breakdown of laboratory equipment, physically moving the laboratory equipment to an alternate area, reassembling the laboratory equipment, assembling any chemical compounds that may be needed, and other activities required to make the laboratories ‘student-ready’. The physical aspects of the work associated with the laboratory supervisor position permeate the majority of those duties and responsibilities considered essential to this position. This position also provides support for faculty and students in the delivery of both laboratory instruction and laboratory-related research associated with the mission of the CET. This position reports to the Director of Laboratory Operations.

( 20%) Interact with CET departments and other colleges within the university to support effective delivery of lab instruction, which may include, but is not limited to: (1) rearranging laboratories which requires lifting above head level, climbing ladders, driving a forklift or hand-lift, palletizing products, moving lab equipment and the visual acuity and dexterity to measure, weigh and manipulate small items such as circuits; liquid and dry chemicals, (2) fabricating and/or 3D printing special items needed for the lab, (3) making modifications to lab equipment, (4) installing or repairing lab equipment, (5) entering work orders to install software or facility repairs and (6) any other preparation to ensure the lab is ready for each session for faculty and students to complete the planned laboratory experiences in a safe and academically sound manner.

( 20%) Supervise use of assigned laboratories to ensure that they are in effective operational condition to support course expectations and outcomes. This will include, but not be limited to: (1) purchasing, installing, and maintaining lab equipment, (2) purchasing supplies and tools, (3) tracking inventory of all equipment, tools, and expendable supplies; (4) other items assigned by the supervisor and in compliance with university policies and procedures.

( 10%) Assure that laboratories are well organized and maintained. Promote and model laboratory best practices. Dispose of materials and chemicals according to university policies and procedures.

( 10%) Serve as liaison to designated faculty to determine laboratory needs and supervise student organizations that utilize university lab space. At times, this position may also be responsible for supervising students engaged in off-campus service-learning activities.

( 10%) Follow the CET Safety Policy. This policy is updated regularly, thereby requiring the Laboratory Supervisor to visit this policy periodically. Participate in the development of laboratory policies and update door postings as needed.

( 10%) Collaborate with faculty and department chairs to achieve instruction or research objectives in the CET laboratories.

( 20%) Supervise and provide instruction on laboratory procedures to students as requested by the laboratory instructor. Provide instruction to ensure that students are appropriately trained in the safe use of all laboratory equipment and facilities. Document all training, including the names of students who received each type of training. Verify that safety training has been completed upon request of student access to laboratories. In conjunction with the Laboratory Coordinator and/or Laboratory Instructor, enforce those procedures and policies, ensuring all personnel using laboratory facilities have had the proper training.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Preferred experience includes laboratory operations, electronics, circuitry, instrumentation repair, 3D modeling/CAD software, 3D printing and a biology (or similar) background to understand laboratory equipment and experimentation in a Bioprocess and Biomedical setting (biochemistry wet labs).

License or Certification required by the Department
Valid Driver’s License.
